Given some time and money, we could do this. We could do all sorts of things!

But, it doesn't really fit. Fanime is about community, and fighting doesn't really build communities. ^^;

That said, we're looking at something in a similar, but more light-hearted/fun/athletic, light.

In actuality I've probably made just as many friends at martial arts tournaments as I have outside of martial arts. Contrary to popular belief I don't think 'fighting' by itself is aggressive at all, because there has to be a personal motivation to be aggressive, and 'winning' doesn't qualify, otherwise we'd have to rule out chess! Now that is an aggressive sport!. Truthfully the only place I have never shown any aggression is inside a sparring match; I know because I used to be extremely violet and got into alot of street fights when I was young.

I've probably been to at least 8 tournaments in my lifetime, mainly only doing sparring and breaking competitions and I'd sit and hang out with other coaches and competitors both in my division and others and I'd make friends with them, kick their ass, get my ass kicked (maybe even harder) and I'd walk away still friends with them.

The biggest tournament I go to is held at a church that is a registered school too. The other locations these are typically held at are a YMCA, and a regular high school. Martial arts is a better family event than video games I say, I've seen many families compete for many years.

I'm with everyone else on this matter, I've been in martial arts for many years now, experience in a few different styles, and as much as I would love to bring all my sparring equipment and padding I can't see this happening without working with the convention managers directly. Even if it could be done it would most likely only happen at a hour when there aren't many active people and few people around. Even if someone who has experience hosting tournaments stepped and negotiated with Fanime I think they would have a hard time getting it approved and there would pretty much be several forms signing your life and rights away should you get hurt.

And it would require lots of planning and space.
1 How big of a ring
2 weight classes?
3 experience classes? I wouldn't want to fight someone with no experience, I'd have to throw the match.
4 legal forms
5 sparing equipment? Bring your own? share? provides? what equipment is required/qualifies
6 substrate? What sort of foundation would we be fighting on? carpet? wood? cement? padding? cement blocks with gravel mixed in? (Yes I've had sparring matches with people on cement blocks that is decorated in small gravel)

It's a wonderful idea, I haven't been to any tournaments in several years. But you have to do serious public relations in order to make it happen. I think the two major tournaments I've been to have a had an on sight medic or people trained in medical care.

Hello, I've only been to Fanime once before in the past and my friend who came with me was wondering if you could walk around barefoot. Trust me I know it's not a smart idea and I'll make sure she brings shoes (and band-aids). Heaven forbid someone with 6 inch heels steps on her foot.

Thank you ~ Sephroe Zion
