Big Event Showcase / Re: Fanimaid Café 2014 Official
« on: March 20, 2014, 09:11:41 PM »
Hey, ladies! This is Penko, I was a n00b maid last year and I am SUPER PUMPED to be returning again this year. SUPER PUMPED!!!! FANIMAID CAFE ROCKED ! It was everything I dreamed it would be. I got to feel moe all weekend long and hang out with some BAD ASS girls. Everyone is super friendly and sweet, so please don't be shy to try out. I was really nervous too, but I'm glad I did it! It was the funnest Fanime I've been to since 2007 (am I showing my age here?)

If anyone has any questions at all, feel free to PM me too :3

I have a question for the big cheeselets: I sorta remembering reading somewhere that you guys were thinking of doing Skype tryouts. Are you still considering that? Or did I maybe dream it?

I was going to bring a friend of mine to try out this weekend, but she had to take over a shift at work at the last minute. She was really excited to try out and is super bummed she can't. :C

Registration / Can I make a group if I reg'd at con last year?
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:01:36 PM »
Question's pretty much in the title. I registered for 2014 at con last year. Is there any way I can make a group and be the pick up person?

And while I'm at it... can I log into registration? It asks for my email and confirmation number, but I have misplaced the little sheet I got when I registered last year (not sure if that even had anything on it). And of course, I never got a confirmation email since I registered at con. @___@ Does that mean I'm cooked?

Live Programming and Events / Anyone selling headdresses at the AA?
« on: May 22, 2013, 11:07:50 PM »
Hey, Artist Alligators!

I'm hitting the AA first thing on Friday to find a headdress for my maid outfit for the rest of the con. Which one of you guys is selling headdresses (preferrably black and/or white) at your booth?? >:V

Just thought I'd post here and see if I could make an preliminary map for whoever's selling them <:  AA is my favorite thing at Fanime, so I'll take my time and look through everything throughout the weekend. But I want to choose a headdress asap!

Registration / Re: Lines for badges on Thursday
« on: May 18, 2013, 12:07:45 AM »
I get off work at 6:30 and I don't expect to be able to get to the line til 7 or 7:15ish. Is there any point in me trying to get my badge on Thursday at all? ?____? Or do you guys think I should just show up as early as I can on Friday morning?

So TL;DR, you will probably get your badge even if you show at 7

Thanks for the response, ewu~ Good to know Thursday's still an option, but it sounds like it's gonna be quite the wait.

well if you're going Friday morning I would recommend showing up sometime before 10am. If you do it will be less than an hour wait. The major line starts around 11:30 -noon.

I might just end up going on Friday. B: I'd rather just wake up early and wait an hour than wait 3+ hours directly after work.

edit: I don't mind staying as long as it takes on Thursday night, but I'm worried that if I'm still several people back in line at 10pm, they'll just tell me to go home. Then I waited 3 hours for nothing D:

Big Event Showcase / Black and White Ball Dance Lessons
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:39:56 PM »
Are they usually pretty packed, or is it easy to get in?
I'd love to go to the B&W Ball, but I only want to prepare an outfit if I can get to the dance lessons.

Live Programming and Events / Re: Artist Alley - Are we being ignored?

There has been a steady stream of info going out on the AA facebook. Not much action the the forums, but I have tried to answer them myself. Email responses are going out, but slowly. Staff busy with Fanime and their own lives.

I would love for a staffmember to relay whatever AA facebook info there is to the forum people. OR, at the very least, post a link to the AA fb. I'm having trouble finding it on googer.

« on: February 10, 2013, 11:34:49 AM »
Another reason there might not be electricity is because artists should be used to not having any by now, hehe.

I skipped over the only con last year to offer electricity at their tables because their prices were WAY too high. Electricity WAS sorta enticing, but I've already learned to get by without power. The extra cost wasn't worth it.

Something I might like instead, though, is WIFI!!!! But that might just be because I don't have a smartphone ):

Hey guys!

Thanks for answering my questions about the dresses and posting all your testimonials. I really want to try out!

Would you guys happen to have a date for the San Jose tryouts? It says tentative, but I thought I'd ask anyway because the San Francisco ones are coming up :X It'd be easier for me to make it to San Jose, but I can make it to San Francisco too.

Hooraaay! Can't wait~

Serious Business / Re: Rules on Booth babes/ Cosplayers?
« on: February 05, 2013, 04:44:50 PM »
My 2 cents because I'm am very interested in this topic.

Any cosplay or boothbabe outfit should be okay as long as it:
1. Follows the law
2. Follows con rules
3. Actually appears in the game/anime/manga

Whatever your size or gender, if your outfit aligns with these 3, I think it should be allowed!

Regarding OP: ofc, the convention had those "decency" rules and they should have been followed. However, it seems dumb that the girls in the OP weren't allowed to cosplay whatever it was they were promoting. I think those rules are kinda sexist since a lot of female character outfits are revealing anyway.

My underlying opinion is that if the cosplay is in an anime or game and it's an anime or games convention, it should be allowed. What if the congoer just really likes that character? They're at the con to enjoy and express their interests. It's not their responsibility to add more clothing to the character design.

Aside from that: if you are someone who thinks that people need to cover up cause of "morality" or cause they're fat, then you needa mind your own damn business imho. If you don't like it, then don't look.

I think in terms of cosplay people should wear what they feel within reason
[...]
Some solutions to this problem are very simple. First consider the audience that is going to be at the convention, for example children and young families will be more abundant at the convention on Saturday and Sunday. And of course there is also people who like to take their cosplay out on the town.

Times like this would be more appropriate to wear a more conservative costume and save the more revealing costume for the 18 and over events later in the evening. (needless to say bring a long jacket or a small change of clothes if you have to go outside to return to your hotel room.)

I think these are really smart ideas, though I imagine what counts as 18+ revealing will probably differ between people.

Buy/Sell/Trade / WTB Long White Wig
« on: February 04, 2013, 09:41:46 PM »
Heyo, I'd like to buy a long or extra long white STRAIGHT wig. I prefer it to be unstyled, but will consider anything that is reasonably similar to Togame from Katanagatari.

I'm hoping to save money by buying used, so I will accept pretty much any price that is (maybe ~$15) cheaper than having to buy from Cosworx or something (nowadays, Cosworx is selling Ivy Long wigs for $45 after shipping). I have Paypal or can pay with card if you have a merchant's account.

Thank you! (:

Thank you! Glad I can help.

Both sateens I used were from Joann Fabrics. I'm not entirely happy with the lighter weight sateen used in the gold dress, but it was the only 100% cotton (and thus dyable) sateen that they had. I wouldn't recommend a lightweight quilting sateen unless you needed soemthing quite lightweight and without much sheen at all (or needed to dye the fabric.) The midweight sateen (for the black dress) was in the bottomweight section, and is a stretch sateen, with a bit of spandex mixed in. It comes in fewer shades, and I have not tried using dye on it, so you'd have to experiment if you needed to dye your fabric. This is one that I would use, regardless of the lack of color choice. (I have also made a couple of blazers out of that sateen, but I don't have any photos...I'm sure you get the idea!)

I can't say anything for the quality of sateens at other shops.

How much did they cost you, if you don't mind me asking? :V

I was thinking of checking this other store in San Jose called Fabrics R Us because everyone always says it's really cheap. But the Yelp reviews also say that the employees are generally no help at all, and I'm not sure I'll be able to find this fabric on my own if it's not labeled.

If you want sheen, but not too much, and want ease of sewing, I'd look at a nice mid-weight cotton sateen. It is a cotton fiber with a satin weave, so it has sheen, but isn't SHINY like poly satin can be, nor is it slippery like silk or poly can be. It will also give you a nice drape on those sleeves, and will be more screen-accurate than a shinier fabric would be.

I love cotton sateen. I use it pretty often, actually. Here are some examples. (Ignore things like unpressed costumes and messy floors in progress shots...and my face, derp...also, the black dress uses a heavier weight stretch sateen, and the gold uses a lighter weight quilting sateen, with a bonus "wrong" side of satin for the underside of the skirt, with the white applique and tie with the black dress being the "wrong" side of poly dupioni, which as a slight nubby texture)

I think that the weight, drape, and level of sheen would be appropriate. I use it where I want something with lustre and a fancier look without being shiny.

You can also use a dull satin or the "wrong" side of satin. The basic rule of thumb is the lss shiny the fabric, the less slippery it is. And really, with good pinning, and a little practice, it isn't really that difficult to sew a fabric with sheen.

Certain satins tend to fray quite easily, though, so be careful to properly finish your seams. You shouldn't have an issue with a heavier sateen, though.

OMG you're amazing!! Thank you so much! Your cosplays are gorgeous, and I'll definitely look into that cotton sateen stuff!

Hi guys! I really wanna cosplay Togame this year, but I'm not sure what fabric to use. I am a semi-competent seamstress (I've made a handful of hoodies with zippers) but I've never worked with shiny fabric like silk or satin.

Togame is an imperial servant, so her duds have to look fly.

QUESTIONS:
1. Are there any nonshiny fabrics I can use that will still look good?
2. Are certain shiny fabrics easier to use than others?

Thanks so much, guys!

Hey guys,

What do the tryouts consist of? Is there any sort of dance or skill we should practice?

Also, where do the dresses come from? :U Do we buy them on our own?

The tryouts consist of us asking questions about yourself. Its easy questions, nothing to be afraid about.

As for the dancing and such, thats not needed for this tryout.

The dresses you have to buy on your own and it has to be approved by Fanimaid Staff after you get into the cafe. All these things will be discussed at the tryout as well~

Oh, and make sure to come in the clothes that you like or think that describes you. Theres no real need for a super proper suit or anything (unless thats your style).

Thank you so much! It sounds really fun. I think I'll likely come to the SJ try out!

Sorry to keep pushing this, cause you did just say it gets discussed at the tryout, but can anyone give me a ballpark number of how much the dress will cost? I think a deciding factor for me might be whether I can even afford a new dress or not :X

Thank you!

So as far as I can tell, this is okay as long as the other seller has their paperwork (permits etc) and is my secondary partner?

Sounds like I need to know who that partner is before the table sign-ups go live. Unlessss.. can I add secondary partners to the tables after I sign up? Maybe via email or something?

Quote
I wouldn't recommend splitting the table via days, because then you run the risk of short changing one of the table partners. There's a pattern of attendees and sales that happens, and its usually pretty consistent. For instance, Saturday is usually the highest attended day of the con, thus the most money comes in. Your partner who doesn't get the chance to sit in with you kindof gets cheated out of their chance to make the most of their time at AA.

This is a valid concern, but I am not worrying about it too much cause I'm not planning on lying or tricking my partner. I'd let them know what days I want; if they don't like it then they don't have to split with me.

I know that last year, if I weren't able to get my own table, I would have gladly split for Sunday and Monday only. But maybe that's just me~
