Things in the Universe / As Seen On TV
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:31:26 PM »
With the constant influx of weird products made available to us via TV I thought it was about time we dedicate a thread to the weird stuff they're trying to sell us.  (Let me know if this has been done before).  Post your favorite / least favorite As Seen On TV products here.

The EZCracker Egg Cracking device is my new favorite.

So...we're having a HUGE tomato based food fight here in Reno on Saturday August 29th.  It costs $10 to join in, proceeds are for a good cause.

If anyone would like to join in the fun I have room in my apartment for a few people...a few people over 21 who can be well behaved that is.  The 21 thing isn't because I have an issue with people under 21.  It is because I have some booze in my home and I work for the school district.  I need to make sure nothing happens that could get me in trouble.

Let me know!

Knowing no bounds, the Club Cal Neva will once again push the envelope with La Tomatina en Reno, what the club believes will be the nation’s largest ever food fight.

On Saturday, August 29, 2009, at approximately 6:00 p.m., the City Plaza at 10 North Virginia Street will be covered with people drenched in tomato juice as a crowd estimated to be between 3,000 and 5,000 people participate in the country’s biggest tomato fight.

Admission in to the tomato fight is a minimum $10.00 donation with all profit from the event going to the American Cancer Society.

The event will begin at 1:00 p.m. with street vendors populating Virginia Street between First and Second Streets. Visitors will be able to enjoy plenty of food, beverage, and live street acts while they peruse for gifts and novelties from various local vendors. Food and merchandise vendors will also be on the City Plaza venue where live bands and other entertainment will be showcased.

The day will climax at 6:00 p.m. when roughly five tons of tomatoes will spill onto the City Plaza and thousands will scramble to pick up their ammunition for the biggest food fight the city of Reno, the state of the Nevada, and quite possibly the United States has ever seen.

Things in the Universe / Only in my city
« on: July 01, 2009, 07:51:37 PM »
Ladies and Gentlemen I humbly submit proof that my entire city is insane.  These are pictures of the annual "cattle drive" down one of the busiest intersections in Northern Nevada.  I believe that part of the cattle drive was actually ON Highway 395 this year.  You can see the overpass in some of the pictures. See the one with the 7-11 sign?  Yeah, that's just a few blocks from where I live, it is ALWAYS busy there. Sigh.  Only in my city.

I'm just curious.  What bizarre traditions are observed in your towns and cities?  Are you a fan?

I enjoy a lot of of our annual events...however the cattle drive and following Rodeo are not on my list of favorites.

Things in the Universe / House or Scrubs?
« on: April 26, 2009, 09:40:53 AM »
My boyfriend and I started a debate a few days ago.  I've found that a lot of people have an opinion.  Thought I'd share it here.  (it's obviously just a silly debate, but it's fun)

If you were walking down the street and suddenly passed out.  When you woke up would you rather find yourself as a patient on Scrubs or on House?

I say House, cause the odds of walking out of the hospital with all of your limbs intact seems much greater.  He says Scrubs because odds are you have a less serious illness and it'd be more fun.

What do you guys think?

Things in the Universe / How's April Fools Day Treating You?
« on: April 01, 2009, 09:59:48 PM »
First I was ordered by my administrator to do something that made EVERY member of the staff angry at me.

Then, I went to get lunch and wound up locking my keys in the car with $35 of everyone's lunch locked in the car.

Things got better for awhile, my sister unlocked my car, we had a good afternoon.  Heck, she even cleaned my house.

About an hour ago we were playing Karaoke Revolution when the power surged.  Then surged again.  And again.  Then I realized that my circuit breaker was actually sizzling.  Had to call the handyman for my complex over to my house at 9:00 at night.  While he was here he managed to call me crazy and tell my sister he feels sorry for her cause she's related to me.

Sigh...not gonna be sad to watch this April Fools Day go.

How's it treating you guys?

Things in the Universe / Oscars. Is anyone else watching this?
« on: February 22, 2009, 08:10:12 PM »
Almost nothing I want to win is winning.  If Hugh Jackman sings one more time I'm gonna barf.

Buy yay for Heath Ledger!  Best Joker ever, well deserved award, too bad he's not hear to see it.

Anyone else watching this?  Opinions?

http://www.paulsadowski.org/BirthDay.asp

This site is too much fun!  You just put in the month day and year you were born and tells you all kinds of stuff, including the day you were most likely conceived.

Some highlights from mine are:

My tree:

Maple, Independence of Mind
No ordinary person, full imagination and originality, shy and reserved, ambitious, proud, self-respect, hungers for new experiences, sometimes nervous, many complexes, good memory, learns easily, complicated love life, wants to impress.

Dog years:

Your age is the equivalent of a dog that is 4.62035225048924 years old. (You're still chasing cats!)

And how long have I been alive:

As of 2/16/2009 1:43:53 PM EST
You are 32 years old.
You are 388 months old.
You are 1,687 weeks old.
You are 11,805 days old.
You are 283,333 hours old.
You are 17,000,023 minutes old.
You are 1,020,001,433 seconds old.

Merry Christmas one and all.  May the joys of the season bring you joy and peace.

OK...now onto the greedy side of Christmas.  What did you get?

I got a beautiful pendant, a diamond, ruby and saphire pin, and a Wii with two games. Santa even brought us a White Christmas here in Reno.

I's spoiled.   ;D

What did you guys get?

Cosplay! Construction, Tips, Gatherings, Advice / Studio Ghibli Gathering
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:57:07 PM »
I'm interested in doing a Studio Ghibli Gathering this year.  There's almost always a few random characters peppered in the crowd, I think we should try to meet up.  :)

Is anyone else interested?  If so what day and time do you think is best?  What characters would you like to come as?

I will be Sophie from Howl's Moving Castle again.  Anyone else?

Has anyone tried the site soulgeek.com?  If so what do you think of it?  One of the teachers at school brought it to my attention, and so far I'm pretty impressed.  I'm just curious if any of you have tried it out and what you think.

Things in the Universe / I need a band-aide for my brain
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:02:10 PM »
So I know a lot of people don't agree with seeing psychologist and what not.  But sometimes we all need more help then the people near and dear to us can give.

That being said I have to admit that after decades of mentally beating myself up I'm finally seeking help from a councelor and a psychiatrist.  I've always known that I have Social Anxiety Disorder, and honsestly that's what I went to get help for.  After speaking with both professionals and my GP I find that I also suffer from General Anxiety Disorder and warped core image.

Now I'm on meds, I have to stop and concider everything going on in my head and around me when I start feeling stressed or angry with myself.  I have to keep a journal of my thoughts and a log of situations where I'm exhibiting "cognitive disfunction".  It's taking over my life.  I want to feel better.  I want to be able to talk to people without fear.  I want to participate in normal human relationships, something I've never had the skills to cope with.  I know I need to do these things to reach those goals.  However, I feel like my life is being taken over by my 'treatment'...and it's only been a few weeks.

Is there anyone out there who's willing to share any advise or insight they might have?  Someone who's dealt with the mental health system?  Someone with a similar experience?  I'm just feeling really alone and like a total freak, I'm just wondering if there's anyone else who can relate.

Things in the Universe / Gotham Knight
« on: July 13, 2008, 07:37:56 PM »
I just watched Gotham Knight.  I'm curious to find out how many people have seen it.  What did you think?

I admit I'm pretty easy to please, if it's Batman I'm happy.  I enjoyed myself greatly.  Now I'm really excited to see Dark Knight on Friday!

My only problem?  Is it me, or did Bruce Wayne look a lot like Light Yagami in that one piece?

Things in the Universe / Teen Killed By Roller Coaster
« on: June 28, 2008, 06:31:04 PM »
This just sounds horrible.   :o

I feel bad for the people who were on the ride when this happened.  I don't have a lot of pity for some fool who jumped fences and ignored warning signs.  Still...what a terrible way to go!

SC teen struck, killed by Six Flags coaster in Ga.
By MIKE STOBBE – 30 minutes ago

AUSTELL, Ga. (AP) — A teenager was decapitated by a roller coaster after he hopped a pair of fences and entered a restricted area Saturday at Six Flags Over Georgia, authorities said.

Six Flags officials are uncertain why the unidentified 17-year-old from Columbia, S.C. scaled two six-foot fences and passed signs that said the restricted area was both off-limits and dangerous to visitors, spokeswoman Hela Sheth said in a news release.

Authorities were investigating reports from witnesses who said the teenager jumped the fences to retrieve a hat he lost while riding the Batman roller coaster, said Cobb County police Sgt. Dana Pierce. Police have declined to release the teenager's name until an autopsy is completed.

Six Flags said it closed the roller coaster after the Saturday afternoon accident out of respect for the teen's family. The ride was expected to reopen on Sunday, according to a Six Flags news release.

Police said the ride was going full-speed when the teen was struck. The ride's top speed is 50 mph, according to the park's Web site.

No one riding on the roller coaster was injured, Sheth said. The teen was with another boy who also entered the restricted area but was not injured, Pierce said.

The teen and his parents were at the park with a group from the Oakey Spring Baptist Church near Springfield, S.C., police said.

In May 2002, 58-year-old groundskeeper Samuel Milton Guyton of Atlanta was killed after he wandered in a restricted area under the Batman roller coaster's path and was struck in the head by the dangling leg of one of the ride's passengers. The ride was closed for a day to allow the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration to inspect the ride. It was deemed safe for passengers.

In June 2007, a teenager's legs were severed when cables snapped on the Superman Tower of Power ride at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Ky. Doctors were able to reattach Kaitlyn Lasitter's right foot, but she had to have some of her left leg amputated and subsequent surgeries.

State officials blame a faulty cable and slow response by an amusement park ride operator in the accident. Her family is suing Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, claiming the park failed to maintain the ride and equipment and ensure riders' safety. The amusement park has denied liability in court filings.

Things in the Universe / Blinded by unmentionables
« on: June 20, 2008, 03:10:37 PM »
Feel free to read the whole story.  But honestly, the highlight is this quote, "A 52-year-old California woman is suing lingerie giant Victoria's Secret, claiming that a "design flaw" on a pair of V-string panties caused her to suffer an eye injury. "

Just to state my personal opinion...if you BLIND yourself trying on underwear; buy an eye patch and go collect your Darwin Award.  Don't sue the company.

Things in the Universe / Wisdom Teeth
« on: June 05, 2008, 11:06:33 AM »
I just had all 4 wisdom teeth removed about two hours ago.  My whole head hurts and I can't feel most of my mouth.  I really hate my dentist right about now.  And I know it'll be worse once the numbing wears off.

Any advice or words of encouragement?  I just feel really lousy right now.   :'(

Things in the Universe / Good food that's BAD for you
« on: June 01, 2008, 02:38:44 PM »
So as I sit here eating a Bad Dog (1/4 lb. polish sausage stuffed with pepper jack cheese, wrapped in bacon and deepfried on a bun with mayo, mustard and onion) I'm wondering what food you guys enjoy that tastes SOOOOO good you eat it even though you know it's disgustingly bad for you.

Please post those foods that taste good, even though they're going to take years off your life in the long run.

(I know...I shouldn't eat this...but seriously it so good, and I'm WAY low on my calorie intake for the week even counting the Bad Dog...so just once I'm splurging)

Things in the Universe / Fire Alarm
« on: May 18, 2008, 03:43:34 AM »
Why am I posting?  Because it's 3:34 in the morning and I've been up for over an hour.  Why have I been awake for so long and so early?  Because some fool burnt his ....whatever the heck meal he was cooking at 2:30 in the morning and set off the fire alarm.  The whole building was evacuated.

So there I am at 2:30 a.m. standing infront of my car with half the building occupants wearing a nightgown that's not something I ever wanted to be seen wearing in public.  A bunch of Drunk Yahoos (my next door neighbors) stayed on their balcony drinking beer and heckling the people who evacuated.

I'm glad there was no fire.  I'm glad everyone is OK.  I feel bad for the poor fool who burnt his dinner and is now hated by everyone in the building.  But I'm angry that I'm awake at this hour (can't fall back asleep).

OK Rant over.  Has anyone else ever been evacuated from their apartment?
