The next week was filled with yearbooks, meetings, long drives to Berkeley, waking up at 5:30 every morning to work on aforementioned papers and projects even though they were due Tuesday...

The I and II lesson markers were posted on the B&W lesson schedule website but not on the online schedule, so my friend and I also ended up dropping into advanced lessons. However, I appreciated them going over some basic steps for people who also meant to go to a basic lesson before diving into the more advanced stuff.

Would You Book Next Year: Possibly, if I needed to stay at a hotel again.
Pros: Close to con for easy resting, a very decent room (floor 23), room service was delicious.
Cons: We were in a room that was part of a mini suite (meaning we had separate doors which led to a shared door that could be closed), which meant that the noise was pretty loud when they had people over.
Special Notes to Share: Honestly, the elevators were not terrible for us, but we only used it at certain times of day and we didn't have giant bags with us, nor were we in cosplay. So I guess the trick there is to only go back to the room when you really need to and prepare well for the rest of the day.

As it is still relatively close to the end of con and heads/staff are still reading this, I would just like to throw this out there:

I would love to help out with printing/creating the mini-schedule for next year and/or maintaining S2M (staff to member) information on Twitter, Facebook, forum, mailing lists, etc. Unfortunately I don't have enough experience with html/web editing to help out with the main page announcements, but if I did I would definitely help out with that, too.

My impetus for this stems from the fact that I, too, am frustrated by the "holes" in information between all of the sites, and want to improve on them so that others don't end up missing a bit of information on a page they don't check.

Again, just throwing this out there and seeing if it'll stick. An email address to whoever might be involved with either the pocket schedule or site maintenance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A bit of mixed feelings for me. I ended up being so tired/sleepy from doing early-morning Tech work and late-night Swap meet that I didn't end up doing much with my companions, so that created a bit of bad mojo that lasted throughout the whole weekend. The things that I did do at Fanime (some karaoke, some shopping, and Stage Zero) were fun though, so I miss that. Definitely going to try to do pre-con work next year if I end up going with people who actually want to attend scheduled events.

Yes, definitely, now that we have time. I might do it, if no one else will. It was difficult given the timeline we had to replace him, though. He was truly a rockstar with the pocket guide, and it's not easy to fill those shoes in a few weeks time.

As I said above, I would love to help out with this. =)

One made cute vector zombie prints (name started with Pix...). He/she left Monday but my friend wanted to see if he could exchange his prints for different sizes.

Were you perhaps looking for Pixie? I don't know what the zombie prints you're referring to looks like, but if you say "Pix", it's the only one I can come up with.


Ah! I found them. It's actually appleyrotten on DA and she was at the Piximix table. Thanks though! =)

Piggybacking on Kertus, I just want to jump in and say that, from personal experience as a 3rd party observer, it's always better for staff/volunteers to say "We don't know" in regards to things they, well, don't know, rather than "It's coming soon," or other such faulty information. Not only does it it lessen the frustration people feel when they are invariably disappointed, but it lets them prepare accordingly rather than anticipating something that's not coming.

I want to know the answer to this, too. Not to rag on anyone or any dept., but so I know who to talk to to staff next year ;)
I've experience with printing places and folding schedules and making packets and I actually like that type of work.

Two had watercolor-styled prints of Terra, Rydia, Princess Serenity, human-form Midna etc and was staffed by a Caucasian male and Asian female(s) for most of the con.

Or, as himeno said, people from other departments can help staff reg since by Thursday afternoon, the rest of the con has been getting set up since morning.  Then again, they might have still been busy setting up; I can only speculate.  Like I said in a previous post, there are certainly ways to provide incentives for people to volunteer on Day Zero, and from my understanding volunteers already get double hours that day.  I wasn't able to volunteer this year, but have helped at reg in the past.

If you're thinking of departments that are already there on Day 0, chances are they're already overworked by the time reg starts. Tech gets there around 8am and work until around 6pm, and AFAIK Logistics and ConOps are still moving and shuffling things around on that day too. But of course, we would appreciate some lovely, fresh meat volunteers to help out.

/offtopic You wouldn't happen to be the same Plumpkin who went to Cal around 2005-2009, would you?

Staffing.

Actually, the first year I staffed (tech) I was with guys who were all out of my age group, save one person, so it was kind of boring/awkward most of the time. However, this year I got to meet the guy(s) who staffed the Civic (aka MF and Masquerade) last year and had a lot of fun. I also have friends who knew other people from the anime club at my alma mater, so I got to meet quite a few new people.

Going to B&W lessons is great for meeting dance partners (and just cool guys/gals in general), too.

._. i dunno about anyone else but i was super annoyed by the protesters this year, so im contacting the city of san jose to see if i can start a petition to end their stupidity. Ir probably wont work but its worth a try.

Those guys go everywhere and they know all of their rights, so it's unlikely anything will be able to get them to leave. If anything it's the people at con giving them attention and assaulting them that's keeping them there, because that's exactly the reaction they want.

I agree with a lot of what eHash said. I'd also like to add that staffing is not so much "be the change you want to see" as a lot of us, apart from reg and rovers, work behind the scenes, but rather it lets you get an inside look on how a con/large event works and how/why things turn out the way they do.

I have worked tech and other ops-related positions in larger events (ie. film festivals that run from 10-13 days) and, no matter how well the heads plan and execute, something always goes wrong and we always try our best to fix it -- that is, if we even know something IS wrong.

Something else that I think most people don't know is that ALL staff, even the heads, are taking time out of their own busy lives to plan and run Fanime for no pay. While that means that a lot of these people are truly passionate about what they do, it also means that they do not have time to screen and train lower level staff to the last detail. I'm sure they hope that their staff use common sense in whatever they do, but in practice it doesn't always happen.

Oooh! I didn't know we had input on the themes -- I don't have a huge opinion on them even though it's fun to see the art, but here are some of mine:

!! Magical girl/boy -- because it needs a revival !!
Dolls/Puppets/Marionettes -- like old Victorian/porcelain dolls, not BJDs, although all types should be represented I s'pose
Stage/theatre tropes -- like Harlequin/Columbine, Noh, Kabuki etc
"Film" -- Westerns, Samurai flicks, good cop/bad cop, etc

I didn't get to go to very much of the ball or the lessons, but here are my thoughts:

-The room was too small this year. I understand that the Imperial ballroom may not have been available, but my partner and I felt that the dance floor was far too cramped.

-I really enjoyed the lessons! It was especially helpful that the more advanced lessons still went over the basic steps for the people who couldn't make the earlier basic lesson. I also appreciated the format of the lessons -- even though I went with my guy friend this year I know a lot of people did not go with a partner and the format made it easy for singles.

-This is less under staff's control and more of just a general observation, but most people who stayed on the outer edges still did not "travel" during waltzes and such. My partner and I were yelled at for not traveling even though we were desperately trying to weave through people who were staying still, and that put a bit of a damper on our night.

All in all though, I had a pretty fun time and am planning on going next year to more lessons and more of the ball. Cheers!
