Hotel and Facilities / Re: Hotels....
« on: February 28, 2016, 02:26:03 PM »

Yep,I just checked it,and the nearest available is just shy of 3 miles away. Good thing I'm getting back in shape.  >:(

Fanime has a free shuttle service to most if not all of those 3+ mile hotels. I've used it in the past to get to Clockwork Alchemy and it really wasn't that bad.

Shuttles are nice, considering I've got a reservation at the furthest hotel on the fanime block, but then it's a matter of scheduling. How long are the shuttles going to run? And how often? Considering those options, certain after midnight panels could be completely written off and even a minor cosplay snafu, like forgetting a prop, could lose a half an hour or more of time. I may still be fine with the hotel I have reserved, but I'm still betting more on the waitlist

Well, I kinda jumped the gun, and I don't have the extra coin to just amtrak my way over to san jose just to hang out and have a few drinks. But if anyone wants to hang out at anime expo, I'm putting my eggs in that particular basket for the time being. Fanime next year is also a possibility for me, but I can't expect anyone to be willing to drive my ass for three hours and then back another three.

Well, you should be able to get one weekend day off. Anything less sounds like it would be against the law. It's looking like I'll be able to go, so I'll keep an eye out

Yeah, I had a moment like that 3 or 4 years back. There was a mess with everyone getting to the con and paying for the room. So I wound up spending 2-3 hours waiting outside in the sun for everyone to finally pay for the damn room before going up and just collapsing for a good hour or two. I was already pretty dehydrated too. Even worse, it started out they wanted me to pay through paypal, but that wouldn't work, so I had to withdraw it and was stressed for another couple of days after the con wondering if paypal was going to screw something up. And that's why I don't do paypal

I was actually thinking the same thing as well if worst comes to worst. It would be a shame not to go since I always have fun and I've been going for years.

Yeah. I'd be lying if I said it wasn't because I wanted to at least spend a day even if I couldn't go the whole con. But you know, not having a room is not having a room. I don't want to spend even more on public transportation or parking fees just to be at some random hotel 5 miles away

Have you ever gone party hopping at Fanime? My girlfriend D has done it. She says it's really easy to do. I was actually thinking about taking her up on the offer. Since I've never done it before.

I have on other cons. Fanime has always been ahoy or a miss. Mostly it's a bit of a dry/close knit group. (For me at lest) the room "parties" I been to where just friends of friends, not really open to new people they just meet.

I have tried to start a 21+ M&G in the past but it really never worked out. There was lots of interest but no body wanted to walk a few blocks, spend money, or stay up late. It always left me dumfounded. So I stopped trying to host it.

....Won't walk, won't spend money, won't stay up late. Why even go? Even when I had a sort of meh time at conventions I did all three. Even when I didn't have money I had times I would skimp on food and buy a shirt or something. And all the best food is like a 5 block walk and then right back to the con

I love going to cons but I do have anxiety and not eating or sleeping fucks me up. If I don't get enough sleep I'm at a higher risk for a panic attack. Which sucks balls.

I meant more in terms of staying up late, sleeping in the next morning. I sometimes have problems if I don't get enough sleep too. And in terms of food I still eat, it's just like some mcdonalds fries or something. The funny thing is, drinking does this weird thing where despite feeling like hell any other time I don't get a full nights sleep, I often wind up awake 6 hours later, a little tired but otherwise perfectly fine.

Never actually been. I've heard good things. Hoped I'd at least get one badge so I could see what all the fuss is about but no dice. Just trying to plan for other things now and try again next yer
You know what, I been trying to go for the last 5 years.
NYCC still has tickets..... But it's not the same as SDCC, so said a couple of friends that went to both.

If I had the cash to throw down for it I might be more interested in going to nycc, but eh. As much as I'd like to spend some time in ny, sdcc is just closer and easier. I don't know anyone on the east coast so it would be kind of a logistics nightmare

I'm down to drink during Fanime. It's most fun when drinking in a big group  :D

I might actually be down to spend a day at fanime even if I still don't find a room for this. Don't get the full experience but at least get a little down time with some peeps

Well if not this year there's always next year. I seem to have gotten to the roommate rush late so it seems I'm sort of SOL. I've had bad luck getting conventions planned lately. Looks like I'm down to one convention this year, since AX hasn't had hotels posted yet and I didn't have any luck getting a badge for comic con

That's true! Well hopefully things get better for you! I know planning for conventions is stressful.
How is comic con by the way? I've always wanted to go but I've always seem to miss the window of opportunity.

I'm 26 and also like to meet new people. I'm not really sure if I'm going this year but it would be nice to find someone else around my age

If this starts up again and I manage to get a room, I'd be down. It'd be great to talk with some people that are interested in more than the usual shonen/harem show I almost always wind up having to talk about

Introduction: Name's alex. 26. Sup
Hotel Information: Willing to stay at the hilton, marriott or anywhere within walking distance. I will plan fri-mon, but thurs-mon is also acceptable
Requirements: Will pay when I get there. I've not had good experiences with paypal. Will probably want to have some drinks in the room during downtime. Would be willing to kick in a little extra for a bed
Contact: Pm me or skype-anojebussan
Miscellaneous: I would prefer to room with a bit of an older crowd (20+) since I'm a bit older myself but as long as there's some mature restraint it's not an issue. I'm also a bit of a night owl so I may wind up awake and on my phone at 4 am. Willing to make some new friends so maybe we can hang out around the con too. Less interested in typical shounen. More interested in stuff like tatami galaxy, rahxephon, akagi, outlaw star, kara no kyoukai, GITS, etc

2/21, still looking. Ideally would like to pay 100-150 or less. Willing to pay more if I get a bed and there's less people in the room

im still iffy on if im gonna go this year. but if i do, want another nick cosplayer?

14
pretty much anybody from the left 4 dead groups. i was nick. i wanted to try and hang around with everyone but i was starving and trying my friends who were all over the place. again, people that were trying to get my attention while i had the water case on my head, sorry, already had it on me like 20 minutes and was in a hurry

15
oh yeah btw if anyone thought i was ignoring them when i was taking that case of water to my room on sunday, i had already given out a few and couldnt spare any more. also, it was carrying it on my head and wanted the weight off my skull. especially since i wasted like 2 minutes with a staffer telling me i had to go get a peacebond (wooden sword) when i was quite obviously not going to be swinging the thing around. trust me, i would have stopped, if only to be a bit nicer, but id already been walking like 20 minutes with that thing and wanted the case gone. particularly because i had to lug the last case up 8 flights of stairs

Ladies and Gentlemen!

Late to the game, which is to say, after the game, but I was there as the Southern-talkin' Ellis. The one with the gray coveralls tied about my waist, and the orange chainsaw. I was also present at the 2010 meetup as a blue spy with a Yaranaika mask.

Thanks to everyone who showed up, and especially to my fellow L4D and L4D2 cosplayers! I had a blast hanging out in and out of character. Special thanks to the Zoey I proposed to with pills, and the Louis for lending me his shotgun in a time of need.

Thank you all, and if at all possible, if anyone has any photos they got of me, I'd love to get/see them if I could! Message me here or through AIM/MSN/whateveryouwant.

sweet, i was the nick cosplayer. really was a hell of a gathering, wish there was more time to hang out and joke around. would have tried to be more in character but i had issues making sure i could even get to fanime so there was only so much i could do. definitely wouldnt mind doing it again next year

yeah, id go with both if possible. the more info to vote by, the better. probably easier for the people that dont necessarily watch much anime to pick accurately

yeah, i think saturday or sunday would be best for the awards. which if i remember correctly this year was on monday. then again that might have been an encore. which i had to skip because i was just so tired over the weekend by the time i had gotten everything straight with check out i just wanted to go home. and as for the meetup, im not a morning person even when im not exhausting myself at a convention so the farther past noon you get, the better chance id actually be able to work up the energy to show up. but then everyones got their gatherings and whatnot to work around so maybe thats just me

By the way, what was your video?  At the same time I understand the feeling of submitting a video with an old or unknown anime, I think we're pretty lucky just to have high caliber judges.  And since at least one set of them were students, I imagine most of them didn't have time to sit down with the anime involved in the finalist videos.  Your video was a finalist; just that alone probably shows that they were able to enjoy it with or without knowledge of the anime.

the ga rei zero one in the action category. used lycanthrope by +44. its not so much that i doubt that the amv is good, like you said it made it into the finals so its obviously got SOMETHING going for it but at the same time theres this feeling that the nuance is probably lost. like i may use a scene that on its own doesnt look like anything but its used because its a turning point because of something wasnt shown. and i dont mean every amv necessarily needs this or that it should be done regardless of how many eps the anime is or when its turned in. im talking about for people that made the soft deadline, or earlier, maybe not even finished but want to give a heads up since they know its going to be done. obviously this isnt for shows that have 75 episodes or massive fanbases or what have you, but those kinds of silent but maybe more adult or story based ones that really dont get on the radar all that often.. even if its still like "okay, tell me what eight episodes are important. what is there to skip, where is the filler?" those episodes that are watched could very well bring a lot of perspective that you just cant get in a five second clip. and thats just 3-4 hours, which could make a whole lot more of the story make sense. and thus more of the action makes sense. i mean, i got a amv on the back burner that ill probably finish for next year that uses ef a tale of memories. which is artsy and nice and all, but theres a lot of clips that could be very confusing if you havent watched it. so it could be very appealing visually, but still get sold short because its true artistic merit is lost. were talking a year heads up for someone to watch 13, maybe 26 if i use the second seasons episodes. its not REALLY necessary, but at the same time say one of the judges wants to watch something dramatic and doesnt really find anything on his own. this could also give the judges some suggestions they may actually enjoy and at the same time help them understand the true intent of the amv. if the judges dont want to then the judges dont want to but if some of them do, then its another thing that might level the playing field

well. long as were doing feedback. some things that would be appreciated. faster emailing and notification. now i understand there is a certain amount of time that it takes to get things ready, have all bases covered, everything judged correctly, double checked, etc, but it seemed to me that we were told things were going to be posted "this evening" and it became after midnight tomorrow. things happen, i know, but if things are going to delay information, at the very least a heads up is in order. this really irked me after the amv contest because i had to leave early on monday and only caught one amv. then it took till thursday to find out i had lost. which wasnt even that dissappointing except for that i felt like id been strung along an extra three days for not making it through all the ceremony.

an idea, for the sound issues. maybe you guys could play a calibration amv before the entries, just so if theres anything to be adjusted its minor and if anyone gets shorted out theyre probably not in the contest. maybe not even a full amv, but something you can jack with a bit to get the levels straight.

scheduling. less for the amv contest as i understand thats kind of futile with the need to get all the votes tallied and everything, but for the gathering, afternoon, next time, please? i wanted to go but the night before i had a horrid time getting to sleep and i was not in a position to wake up at 9:30 speed through a shower and jump over to....wherever it was. if it was more like around dinner time, or saturday instead of sunday, there might be some space to work with. maybe it isnt all that much of an issue for everyone else and i can respect that but at the same time id still like the time to get up, take a shower and not feel like tar.

another suggestion that might help some of the lesser known animes in amvs, and i can understand how this might not work with some people but id like it out there, if an amv is early enough, and the creator wants to make sure that someone in one of the judges seats can at least explain why it fits with the story instead of just the usual judging guesswork, you could have some judges that will watch at least some of it. not all if its some massive show, but at least have it so that if theres a good chance the amv is going to make it into the finals that someone will have seen it and might be able to advocate for it. there are some animes where its obviously not that necessary or it would be too troublesome for people to make the time i understand, but i feel theres amvs, like mine, where the series just isnt that mainstream and it can slip through the cracks. and were talking 13 episodes here. thats a weekend someone might be willing to put in to understand the story of an amv. because i mean, i know its stupid to tell someone to watch something the day before theyre going to judge an amv or something, but at the same time, i met the soft deadline, i knew the anime i was going to use ahead of time, someone probably had a free weekend and could have just watched it, probably enjoyed it, and then could have leveled the playing field a bit. i like making amvs and i like competing and all but at the same time im not going to use a mainstream anime just to win and it feels like every time the audience is going to pick something else just because theyre more familiar with it and the judges are the only chance i got, only because they might be into the more different series than most people. if i lose by skill then i lose by skill but if i lose by obscurity then skill doesnt even come to play
