Registration / Re: "Valid Gov't Issued Photo ID"?
« on: May 03, 2014, 06:57:38 PM »
How about an expired CA driver's license? Mine will expire in a week and I've already renewed it, but the new one will be sent in the mail, HOPEFULLY in time, but if it's not, all I have is a printed temporary license with no picture on it.

If the new one gets lost in the mail or delayed, is that going to be a problem?

Do you do Miku/Vocaloid vinyl decals?

I do. I'll be in the artist's alley.

FFS, would it help if we got out and pushed?

I wish they would get Danny Choo. He wouldn't have to do any panels or anything, just get him to work on the website so it didn't suck so much.

The Artists Alley registration part of the website is broken. The webteam strikes again.

42 days until the convention starts and the website has content!

Congrats to the webteam on a personal best.

Well, you know, Fanime is a model of transparency and accountability...

Fanime draws over 20,000 attendees, most of whom are paying well over $50.00 to attend. Add in the money paid by dealers for their space, artists in the artists alley and the flea marketeers and Fanime has to be drawing well in excess of a million dollars a year.

So, where is it going? It certainly isn't buying us professional grade website development and support. Hasn't been showing up at the registration side of things, either. Guests? NOPE. Where does the money go?

Sure, the facilities aren't free. Still, it seems to me that Fanime would benefit greatly from letting a professional event management team run the show. Either that or a comprehensive audit. Maybe both.

SELL FANIME TO A COMPANY THAT HAS THE ABILITY TO RUN IT PROPERLY.

It's still not possible for industry people to even attempt to register to attend the convention.

Hope you weren't expecting any panels?

They're expecting fans to run panels. They're offering comp badges if you do enough of them.

ByFansForFans - because professionals won't put up with this nonsense.

Live Programming and Events / Re: -- Artist Alley Announcement --

The short answer is that Fanime may be getting bigger, but the AA is being crammed into a smaller space, so there needs to be fewer tables. The review process addresses the problem by insuring that no AA applicant will be denied a table because of a lack of tables on Fanime's part, they will be denied a table because of a lack of 'quality' on the artists' part.

If this was a professionally operated show, this wouldn't be happening. Anyone who has taken Econ 101 knows that if you have a fixed supply of a resource and way too much demand for it, you raise the price.

Sure would be nice if they would let AA people sign up for tables on the last day of the con, like dealers...

This isn't necessarily related to the website but today I talked to someone who works at a shop that has a booth in the dealers' hall and he said on his end things have been way better than last year as far as organization and communication goes, so that gives me some additional hope!

So, the dealer's room registration doesn't use the website? That seems a little odd. How would a first time dealer be able to get an application in?

We got more buttons on the website thanks to the website suggestion thread, but I agree that the site needs to get its act together and communicate to us in some way what is happening and why there is so much of a delay. All we can hope for is that management next year will be better since they rotate every 3 years or so.

All that rotating staff means is that your con chair is a rookie every three years or so. It's a great way to ensure that nobody gets good at their job.
Regardless of how many years somebody has spent on staff, being chair of a con takes a different mindset and different skiillset. This system ensures that any con chair is either a rookie, has one year of experience, or is a lame duck.

The staff doesn't rotate - only the Chair does and the Chair is always someone that has been a staffer for many years to ensure that it's not someone that comes in without knowledge of FanimeCon.

This would be a fantastic suggestion for a convention staff that had their collective act together.

Guess you where not there at the feedback panel at the end of Fanime. The board of directors answered the same exact questions.

It may not be word for word but the gist is this.
What they said, Clockwork Alchemy has it's own staff, finances, etc. What Fanime does share is it's web support and it's promotion.

So there you have it. That is at lest what they told the people at the room.

If that's true, then the sharing of web support is pretty uneven, don'cha think?

The layout was OK. The air quality was Beijing-esque. On Monday morning, it was a wind tunnel that knocked over my friends booth backdrop and product racks. The side doors were mostly locked for no good reason. (and the ones that were open were the most inconvenient ones possible) The floor was grimy and sticky. The foot traffic was meh. The signage and directions in the program book were non-existant.

All in all, I'd prefer that the South Hall was bulldozed and returned to a parking lot again.
