I have been quietly updating my Google+ album for this current year, and the last couple of shots (as of 3/27/13) are notable in that they've started tearing out the courtyard area.

RIP Fountains.

someone go check how it looks now and take pictures

Problem is, a large part of the fountain area (including where the fountains were) are fenced off as part of the construction area.  I mean, you could hold a camera over fence level if you really wanted to, but you won't get anything really interesting since the late, unlamented Huckleberry Farm (the flowerbed that temporarily replaced the fountain last year) is now obliterated and used to pile construction materials and such onto.

A quick note!  With my G+ album getting rather full and unwieldy, I decided to start a new album for this coming year.  Shots for 2013 can be found here: https://plus.google.com/photos/102788761703888329369/albums/5828734887631400561

When is it scheduled to open again? Summer 2013 or 2014?

Last I checked, Fall 2013

It should be noted that we're still a little over five months away from Fanime 2013, so things can still change as far as the hallway chokepoints go.  They've been making good progress so far over the months since Fanime 2012 (just check my G+ album linked above!), so there's still time for things to improve in some areas compared to how things are at the moment.

And just to keep things updated, they started putting up the expansion's "skeleton" structure today, starting at the Hilton-side corner.  I've already got some shots up at my G+ gallery linked earlier.  They also cordoned off the main entrance lobby as part of the construction zone now, and put up temporary signage over part of the entrance mural pointing people towards the Marriott side for entry to the center.  I didn't get to take photos of inside the lobby just yet, but the information kiosk in the corner has already been removed.

"...celebrate a grand reopening in Fall 2013."

It could still be ready by June, grand reopening is just when there's gonna be a ceremony to celebrate the new additions.

My predictions would be that the new expansion areas will be cordoned off, with no one allowed in the new areas until the Fall (I suspect that, at the very least, interior work in that area will still be in progress by Fanime '13).  Aside from the new areas, the currently walled-off areas inside the center itself will likely be opened back up and renovated.  It's also possible that the courtyard will be opened back up, with hopefully a new fountain (right now, Huckleberry Farm is just a dumping ground for the construction crews).  However, we won't see old favorite photography spots return and I'm not sure how close to the new expansion wing the crews will allow people to gather.  It's a lot of big ifs, aside from people not being allowed in the new wing.  I don't expect that to happen until Fall '13.

Seeing as how the new wing is going to open in the fall of 2013, by Fanime 2013 all the heavy construction should be done by then, would it not?

Question is, just how much of it will be left to do (Fanime being in late spring), and how much will still be cordoned off.  Even if much of the construction and the renovation of the existing portions of the convention center is done by that point, not all of it will be open to the public, at least not the new wing.

So wait... is there now a huge... thing in the middle of Registration? That's either going to make maintaining the lines a nightmare, or they're going to have to move Registration elsewhere.

More rather, registration is currently walled-off as part of the renovation.  How long it'll stay like this, we don't know.

As I posted in another thread in the general subforum, I've started to maintain a Google+ Album (set to public) of the progress of the expansion since the end of Fanime 2012.  I'll be posting new photos every now and then as progress is made, so keep checking in!

But they're killing their weekend?  Really?  Then why the hell would they go all the way out to a convention?  Pay registration? Stay there for 3-4 days? Lug around equipment, pay for a hotel?  Why do all of that for our "late ass halloween shenanigans"?  Why not focus on other things?  Wedding photos, landscape photos, taking photos of birds.  ._.;

They would not spend so much time, money and effort on photographing something they hated, or thought was lame.

I'll be happy to make "more sense" easy. The ones with cameras are usually in plain clothed am I right? Do you see alot of cosplayers taking other cosplayer pics? Nope. And well, if you lived in the SJ area and saw alot of colorful and/or weird costumes dont you want to go down and see whats up? Take pics of those costumes for appraisal and show off to your friends, "hey guys look what I took this weekend at the CC. Bunch of people in costumes!" So the majority of photographers (I did NOT say PROFESSIONAL) are non cosplayed regular people checking out whats happening at their city's convention center. Plus I highly doubt someone from outside California would go to a con and pay the reg fee for all weekend plain clothed lmfao

if I meant PROFESSIONAL I wouldnt have said 95% cause hell freezes over if they are 95% of them taking our pics, otherwise we'd all find ourselves easily instead of making a thread and having 20+ pages of "looking for me" ordeal now would we? Niet, nien, nada, nil.

Speaking as a non-professional cosplay photographer who's been doing this for well over a decade at this point, I'd have to say that this is way off-base.  There are plenty of cosplay photographers, both professional and non-professional, who are anime fans, who pay for con registration and hotel (and some who come in from outside the Bay Area).  Some of us even dabble in cosplay from time to time, though it's not entirely practical (I was one of the Big Macintoshes on Friday, and in past years, I've done casual Kaji from Evangelion).  Yes, there are some photographers who don't pay the registration for a con, but a lot of them are still fans despite your baseless assertions.

Tell me, have you even bothered to try to meet and get to know cosplay photographers?  Granted, it's harder to do so at a crowded convention like FanimeCon, but there are other opportunities to do so out there.  For example, many of us local photographers and cosplayers meet and socialize with each other and the quarterly NorCal Cosplay Gatherings (the next one being on August 11th at Coyote Point in San Mateo).  There are also other events (such as the Cherry Blossom Festival up in San Francisco) and smaller cons (like Animation on Display as an example) where it's easier to socialize and hang out a bit.  You might want to try that before making assertions that don't have much basis in reality.

As expected, every year a female has to start a topic to gain attention and talk about the creepers doing creeper things. Really? Creepers? Is there not another overused word that can be utilized? LOL.

Does there need to be another word?
I mean, Creeper works just fine.

Doesn't quite fit this situation though.  As others pointed out, "rude" is the better descriptor.

So random question, Has anyone sent photos into Equestria Daily about the Meetup?

Not that I know of, but we definitely should! ^^

In related news, one of my facebook friends spotted this:

Even though EQD has never been really big on cosplay, it's worth a shot, and if whoever wants to submit to EQD wants to toss my photos into the mix, they're welcome to do so.

General Convention Discussion / Re: FanimeCon 2012 Feedback

I'm not going to rehash what's already been commented on before.  I think everyone gets the point that the pre-reg situation needs a lot of work at this point, with the con being much bigger than it has been over the years.

What I would like to raise up is the arrangements for storing people's belongings on the last day of the con.  It's an interesting idea having it taken out of the hands of the hotels and centralizing it in the convention center itself (though I suppose the folks at the Hilton were probably less happy about the location than the Marriott folks).  However, it would've been nice to have the closing time pushed back an hour or two.  The way it was this year, staffers in charge of the storage area were telling us that, while they were scheduled to close up at 4, they wanted people to start picking their stuff up at 3.  Doesn't sound too bad, unless you want to go to closing ceremonies/gripe session without having to drag your bags into the room with you.  For me, it was like having to leave Fanime earlier than need be.  Perhaps in the future we can have the hours expanded a little later to accommodate people wanting to hit up closing ceremonies and the gripe session?

Added a couple of shots last night to my gallery linked above, one of which is a night shot showing that they fenced off Huckleberry Farm.  Could it be that its days are numbered now?

I'm hoping they just filled the fountains with dirt until construction is over...

From the illustrations I've seen, it looks like they're planning an overhaul of the whole courtyard area. Here's the webpage on the expansion project.

Thanks for posting them, Jeimizu! :D  Great shots, and some of them fills in the holes from my own photos (since I couldn't take shots of the groups I myself was in).  Much appreciated! :)

Not announcing and breaking their own rule!
I was abit shocked arriving at (thursday)9pm and found out the swap meet is full. We were in line still at a very early time to pick up our badges because rule states "you must have a badge on thursday in order to come in /or to registered for swapmeet.
I check the announcements to see if swap meet changed a ruling that it's okay to visit by without a badge but all i got was the announcement for the black out and handing out free bottle waters!

got the badges at 8:45pm we got all the stuff from my car to the hotel and was surprised swapmeet was full, even if my name was on the list! then around 9:15pm they made announcements that the swap meet is now open for those without a badge!

--My biggest dissapointment is: They DID NOT FOLLOWED THEIR OWN RULINGS nor make any changes/announcements to the forum/website that (thursdays) swap meet is a badgless event!
really appreciated if they had the time to add a quick announcement to the rovers at registrations!
--constantly getting harassed by swapmeet rovers since I was exhausted and needed 20 minute break! (we are not selling, we are just taking a break! come on...)

I'm sorry you didn't get the updates but I did update the website at 7:38pm and the forum at 8:25pm. Do you have any ideas on how I could make future at-con announcements more visible?

Perhaps posting to the Fanime Twitter account as well might help?
