Title: 2013 FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines!
Post by: Marin Jei El on January 27, 2013, 12:14:57 PM
FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines

The rules are put in place to make an even playing field for all contestants. Please keep in mind that we at Fanime aren't perfect, so mistakes can happen.  If the mistake is found on your end, we will do our best to contact you and give you the chance to fix it.  With the large number of entries expected, we can't devote a lot of time to any one FMV, so some corrections may not be allowed. If the mistake is found on our end we will work as fast as possible to correct it.  Remember we on the FMV staff work hard and will do our best to do right by all contestants.

A note to all contestants: please do not send your only or master copy, as all materials submitted will not be returned.

All questions and comments can be sent to: fmv@fanime.com or josemarin7_15@yahoo.com

          UPDATES OF NOTE
            • New mailing address.
            • New Judge's Point Scale/Extra Points.
            • New Category descriptions.
            • Movie Trailers added to Experimental category.
            • New Bonus Awards.
            • New Deadlines.
            • filesend.com is now filesend.net

          GENERAL SUBMISSION RULES

            • Up to, but not exceeding, 2 videos may be submitted per entrant, organization, or group.

            • There is no maximum length for videos, but 5 minutes is preferred as the longest length. Keep in mind that videos of excessive length may be cut due to time constraints.

            • All videos may not have been submitted to any prior Fanime Con AMV event.

            • Any video with extreme sexual and/or excessive violent content will be automatically disqualified from the contest. Keep in mind that some nudity is artistic in nature, but any video that the judges deem in poor taste will be removed.

            • Specific dates and times for all FanimeCon events are to be determined at a later date.

            • Special seating will be made available for all contestants during the showing. Please be sure we have your E-mail and mailing address when submitting so your seating location, times, and materials may be sent to you.

        Video Bumpers
Please don't put opening or closing bumpers in your video if at all possible. We will be putting uniform title bumpers to all the videos ourselves. Having a bumper will not disqualify your video but will be edited out. If you do not want your video to possibly receive a bad edit, please do it yourself.

        Submission Due Dates

All videos must be in the hands of the video coordinator no later than the Hard Deadline of midnight on Wednesday May 1st, 2013. Additional points will be awarded for all entries submitted on the Soft Deadline on or before Wednesday April 24th, 2013. All videos submitted will be tested to make sure that there are no problems with playback. If there are any problems, there is a short amount of time to fix and/or resubmit your work. Remember this isn't school, so don't delay - submit A.S.A.P.

       Digital Submissions
All entries must be submitted in a digital format, this means no VHS, HI8, or BETA Max. To allow complete control over the final appearance and quality of the video submitted, and to prevent quality loss, it is in the submitter's best interest to handle digital conversion.

We ask that you include a text file with your submission information. The inclusion of extra files sent in during your submission will not be tolerated. This infraction depending on the materiel sent may cause you to be disqualified.

        Online Submissions
If you’re a very busy person, and a lot of us are, please send your videos online. You can send your file over the Internet via filesend.net. filesend.net will handle files up to 500mb in size for free with out registration, and 1GB if you register for the FREE account. There are many other file sharing websites online and you may use any that you want, just don’t send links to any illegal or illicit file hosting websites. Remember all file formatting and type rules still apply. Make sure to send your video to fmv@fanime.com. After the video has made its way to us please send another email with all the info as if it were a mailed entry.

Note: Due to problems with downloads from the site and certain restrictions placed upon downloading, we ask that you DO NOT upload via Mega Upload. Filesend.com is preferred.

        Mail all entries to:

        ATTN: Fanime FMV 2K13
        C/o Jose Marin
        5176 Elm Ridge Dr
        Baton Rouge, LA 70817

Note: This address is new. Please update your notes, friends, etc!!!

       File Formats
We are only accepting files that are formatted in MPEG2, AVI, MP4, or MOV. If you choose to select a format that is different from the one’s listed we will contact you and ask that you change it’s format. Please, when exporting your files stay within official resolutions 720X480 or an HD size of 1280x720 and with stereo audio. Videos may be rejected if the resolution is too small.

Suggested Programs for file conversion
If you need to convert your video to an accepted file format we suggest using one of these two programs.   MPEG Streamclip and TMPGEnc. Both are free and easy to use.

ASF, WMV, MKV, Windows Media, Flash/Shockwave Animation, Real Media, and HUFYUV Files are unacceptable.

        General File Settings
Video:
•   29.97 Frames Per second
•   Encode with an aspect ratio of 16:9, 4:3 is allowed but might be stretched during our conversion process.
•   If your original source was film or 24fps add a 3:2 Pulldown this will convert it to 29.97 fps
•   Please encode your video as deinterlaced. Interlaced is OK but we will deinterlace the video for the contest.
•   Video size must be either 720X480 4:3 Format or 1280X720 16:9 Format
•   Single pass set to a variable bit rate and select 16 megabits per second
•   If you use two pass VBR set to 2 megabits as the minimum, 8 megabits as the average, and 16 megabits as the maximum.
•   We have had issues converting certain codecs in the past such as YCrCb or LAM (LAME). Please avoid these if possible. We will contact you if any entries have converting issues and work with you to fix it as soon as we can.

Audio:
•   Use Layer-II or Layer-III audio at 224 Kilobits per second or better
•   Choose stereo over joint stereo for best quality
•   Sample at 44.1Khz

We have a lot of hard drive space available and would rather sacrifice size over quality. If you're unsure of how or what resolution/frame rate/bit rate/audio settings to choose, please send the source file and let us do the conversion for you.

*Note! When resizing your video the choice of maintaining the aspect ratio will be determined on a video-to-video basis.

Events and Judging
Judging staff will consist of Fanime FMV coordination staff, Fanime Con staff, outside technical and artistic judges, and AMV editors not participating in Fanime AMV events for the current year.
Judging staff will separate all videos submitted into 4 genres as follows:
        • ACTION - Think Action, Adventure, Horror things that tell an exiting story.
        • DRAMA -  Think Drama, Romance things that tell a story that makes you feel.
        • COMEDY- Think Comedy, Parody, just things that really make you laugh.
        • EXPERIMENTAL - Think outside the box! Movie Trailer AMV will be included in this category. (any FMV that pushes the limits and crosses genre barriers, A.K.A the ones we can't categorize)

Notifications
Different notifications will be sent out to each contestant depending on how far they made it through judging. I will post copies of the Email’s on the forums and a description of what they mean to avoid any confusion.

1st Email – This will be sent to you notifying you that your video has been received and logged into our system.

2nd Email – There will be two different types sent out. Type A will be informing you that you have made it into the contest. Type B will be informing you yours was not chosen this year.

3rd Email – This Email will be sent to everyone giving you the time, date, and seating arrangements.

100 Point Judging Scale:
        35 Points – Skill/Technical Prowess
35 Points – Creativity/Concept – “does the Video go with the music?” “Does your Music Video flow gracefully or does it roll like Square wheels”
15 Points – Quality of Audio selection – “Does the music fit the tone or selection of anime used in your Music Video” and "Does the quality in general sound ok?"
15 Points – Quality of source material – “Does you video have the DivX Logo? Does your video look grainy when expanded to full screen? Subtitles will hurt this score.”

EXTRA POINTS:
2 Extra points will be given to those who submit on or before April 24rd, 2013
5 Extra points will be given to those that submitted properly – This one must be self evident, you need to submit the right information in the right format. Videos adhere to the submission guidelines regarding formatting, codecs.

*Note! Please keep in mind that the 100 point scale and any extra points are assigned per judge on the judges panel. This means that every point has the potential to make or break a winner.

The judging staff will view each entry and choose which entries will make it into the finals. Don't despair - those that don't make it into the finals will still be shown along with those that did make it into the contest during the con in-between programming during the convention.

        Award Classifications

            • Judges Choice:
Judges Choice will be decided prior to Fanime Con and will not be announced until the Award Ceremony.
            • Viewers Choice:
The attending audience of the finals judging will decide Viewers Choice. All audience members will vote on their favorite video by ballot.
            • Bonus Awards:
Special awards in their own special theme that you're able to get no matter what genre you enter into. (Think bonus stars in Mario Party  ;) )
                    This year's bonus awards are:
                    • The "Best Minute Ever!" Award - Can you make an amazing AMV that clocks in at a minute long or less?
                    • The "Life After Death" Award - Is your AMV focused on the undead? Are the stars of your AMV zombies, vampires, or ghosts? Then this might be for you!
                    • The "Sickeningly Sweet" Award - Chibis? Cute Animals? CUTE CHIBI ANIMALS? Is your AMV's cute factor over 9000? If it has tons of babies, cute furry animals, or is just overly
saturated with super cuteness, then this might be right up your alley.
•The "Satin Panties" Award - Can you make a provocative AMV with super sexy characters? Even more important, can you keep it PG so that we can actually
show it? They can be laughing or blowing things up. It doesn't matter as long as you think they look good doing it.

Each genre will have a winner. There will also be two Best of Show awards chosen out of all submissions (one from Judges and one from Audience). One of each Bonus Awards will be given to the video that best represents the spirit of that award's theme out of ALL entries. Awards will be submitted to all winners during the Award Ceremony, which is held during con. You do not have to be present at the con to receive your award but it would be nice if you were. Any awards unclaimed at con will be mailed out.

      Exhibition Videos
Exhibition videos will be accepted and may be shown at other events during the con. If you wish to submit an exhibition FMV please make sure your documentation says that it specifically is for the exhibition. Otherwise it will be judged as a regular FMV and may or may not be disqualified.

Notice!!! Fanime Con 2013 reserves the right to make amendments to the rules at any time.

Exciting!!

So, a couple questions. Is there still a judges choice award for each category, or has it been reduced to just judges best in show?

Is there still a scale of 3rd/2nd/1st for each category?

If no videos make the finals that fit those specialty awards, will they simply not be awarded?

Any prizes this year?

I guess that was more than a couple... :P Thanks!

Thanks for the questions!
There will still be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each category in Judge's and Audience Awards for each category.
If no one makes the finals showing that meets the theme of the bonus award then the award will not be given out i.e. no one submits a video under a minute, etc...
Also, we are still confirming the prizes, but we are anticipating a $50 Visa Gift Card for each 1st place in each category (both Judge's and Audience) and for each Best In Show (again, both Judge's and Audience Awards). The Bonus Awards will come with an award certificate, however not gift card.

Hope that answers your questions! Cheers!

When I save my FMVs, the details state that the frame rates are 854 by 480. (I use WMM). The original video source is a 4:3 ratio. Will submitting a FMV or two with those parameters work, or will I have to change it to 720 by 480?

There should be a option to convert that into a 16:9 aspect ratio by having the converter add black bars so as not to stretch your image. You can do that on your end or send your submission and we shouldn't have an issue doing it. The benefit of doing it on your end is you get to make absolutely sure that the result is to your liking before it goes before the Judge's panel. Cheers!

Any chance you'll be doing the same thing as last year with the updates?

Quote
First off, we will be posting updates as we near the deadlines for this years contest regarding the number of entries received in each category. We will also be posting previous year's numbers so that you can better decide what kind of FMV entry to submit. This comes from the overwhelming number of outstanding submissions we had last year in the Drama category. Sadly, we did not have a long enough show to accommodate all the totally show worthy FMV's.

Woot! This will be and my buddy's first year entering, we're still deciding upon a production team name. Excited and nervous. I looked at a few of last year's winning entries and they're reaaaaally good! I hope to see everyone there!

So here's what we have so far for 2013
(please note that it is still early as we usually get a flood of submissions during the last few days before the hard deadline):

Action: 5
Drama: 12
Comedy: 2
Experimental:5

Keep in mind that we usually have enough time per category for 5, maybe 6, entries on average. This is why we have such crazy competition and it hurts us to make cuts. Over the past couple of years we have increased the length of the show from 2 hours up to close to 3 hours as we try to squeeze as many entries as possible into the final show.

For perspective, here are the numbers of each category for the 2012 FMV Contest:

Action: 21
Drama: 18
Comedy: 8
Experimental:6

Please note that the number of entries fluctuates from year to year. We've had years where the total number of entries were close to topping 100 entries from around the world! That being said the ratio of each category seems to stay pretty close to these averages. Last year, every Comedy entry made the cut, but we could always use more as it is a fan favorite!

Let me know what you think!

So, I have a question about digital submissions, should we put our entries into a zip file with the text file or do you want us to send the text file as an attachment with a link to the actual video?
Title: Re: 2013 FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines!
Post by: Marin Jei El on April 20, 2013, 11:03:56 PM
You can send the info as a text attachment, or in the body of the email, or even in two emails.. As far as the entry you can send the zip if it fits, but I would recommend sending us a download link so that you don't have to compress it so much. Let us know what works for you or if you have any questions.

Yes. Just in case. We're going through another round of entry processing tomorrow night. When as we finish each round we post in the "Email Updates" topic.

I sent a submission yesterday but I was wondering if that "soft deadline" refers to when you check the file/actually view it.
Title: Re: 2013 FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines!
Post by: Marin Jei El on April 24, 2013, 10:17:22 PM
We actually check the videos as we go along. Once you've gotten a confirmation email, it means that we checked it and everything is playing just fine. The soft deadline is an "early" deadline where editors can submit early for bonus points added to their scores in the Judge's Panel. These bonus points can make a huge difference in overall score as they are multiplied per judge on the panel. THat is to say the bonus is 2 points per judge!

Hi khyaoiness!
We just doubled checked and we had sent an email out to you for your entry. There should have also been an email regarding needing to confirm your street address. Please just shoot us an email with that info. Also, Tiffany has resent out your confirmation email tonight. Please let me know if any problems come up. Thanks!

If you've got the time, is there any chance you could post the numbers of videos received that made it in for the soft deadline? It'd be enlightening to see how many come in at the last possible minute and how many have the 2-point "edge".

Looks like turning Experimental into Experimental/Trailer has really brought out entries in droves! I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with... it's been too long since we've had a trailer category.

My understanding is that the judges look at all the videos then decide which ones make it to the final rounds. Do they view the final entries a second time and score them, or does all judging take place at once?

Also, is it possible to post a tally of entries per category? It'll be nice to know how much was submitted by the hard deadline this year. Thanks!

I'm looking forward to these answers too. Especially the tally.

Will there be a meet and greet this year? I tend to think not, but...

Since the schedule isn't up yet and looks like it might not be for a while yet, I'll ask here: Are we getting 2 showings again this year, and will it be in 2 rooms or just one?

Thanks!

Sometime I should really think about making a comedy AMV. I like making action videos but that category is soooooo tough, cuz their is also
so many other good entries. Well, continuing to wait for that 2nd e-mail.

I know I shouldn't be as nervous as I feel about the waiting. My last videos made it in and did fairly well. I guess since this is my first year submitting a comedy to Fanime I'm more anxious then I should be. I was going to submit the comedy I did last year, but I was trapped in bootcamp and didn't send it off before the deadline. Apparently I was missed lol.

But it's great to see so many entries and I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic contest!

For what it's worth, I've been entering Fanime's AMV/FMV Contest for... uh... 9 years (?) and if you're anything like me, that feeling never goes away. But that makes it all the more exciting if/when you get the good email. :D

Have you sent your vid anywhere else? Has it done well? That'd probably be a good indicator of  getting in to Fanime. :)

Let's see, I sent it out to Anime Conji first and it won Best in Comedy and Best in Show (first time I've ever won that) so I'd like to think that's a good sign, lol.

But wow, 9 years?! Are you going to be at the AMV meet and greet? I would love to meet a veteran and get some in-person advice on how to really step up my game.

Well... I'm going to hold off on saying anything until the finalist emails are out. I'm sure Jose's working on them as quick as he can but it's not keeping me from reloading the forum every couple of minutes...

Last year we had a pile-up of editors on the forum posting while we eagerly awaited the emails. I wonder if we could hope for the same this year. :D

So here's what we have for the 2013 FMV Contest.

Action: 22
Drama: 25
Comedy: 11
Experimental:16

We're finishing up the Judge's Panel and will start sending out the next round of emails tomorrow. This means that you should expect you emails letting you know if you submission has made it into the final show in the next few days. Cheers!

Oh nice! Good to know there's a good amount of comedy and experimental entries this year.

This is my first AMV that I'm entering in contests, so I'm pretty excited and nervous to hear back soon.

I'm interested to see how many of the Experimental videos will be trailers and how many will be traditional-Experimental-doesn't-fit-in-any-other-category.

I agree: AMVs that don't fit in comedy/action/drama/romance categories are rare gems.

That would be fun. Nothing like a pile of nervous editors waiting to hear back from the higher ups.

Good luck! I remember the first time I submitted a video back in 2010 and I was a nervous wreak. Apparently that feeling never really goes away.

I still get freaked out when the contest is actually running. It's so exciting, though.

Do you folks attend the contest both days? I always try to. Seens to how Fanime was the only con I submitted to up until a year ago, seeing your video twice on the big screen (or 4 times, if you run to the other room when it plays there since the categories are scrambled) is too much to resist. :D Plus even though I love going home and downloading the stand-out entries each year, it does feel different seeing it on your computer screen vs a giant screen with a room full of enthused people.

I'm pretty sure I can make it to the Friday viewing, since I'll be checking in that morning and picking up my badge. I really don't know if my friends and I can make it in time for Saturday, since we'll be attending a cosplay gathering that day at 1 PM; and that is super close to when viewings show. A shame though, since we'll be dressed up in the exact same outfits for the anime that I made the AMV with. D:

One of the things I look forward to (especially if I am a finalist; or do they manage to screen all the entries somehow during the whole con?) is seeing my work on a big screen and with booming audio. It isn't the same as watching it online (and definitely when you are editing and crying and yelling at the editing program to cooperate...)

LOL! So true about the yelling and crying. When I tried rendering the video for this contest (with something like 12 hours left to render, re-render and upload) my program casually informed me that the 1st render was going to take 10+ hours. Turned out it wasn't using all the RAM to run the render but for that hour I let it run I was so panicked...

I'm not really sure if they screen all of them anymore. Back when I was a semi-finalist rather than finalist there was an individual screening for the semi-finalists, but that was before Stage Zero. I think it's possible that semi-finalists are used as filler at Stage Zero these days. Or maybe that was just when the coordinator of the FMV contest and the director of Stage Zero were one and the same... I'm sure the current FMV Director will know for sure.

Well Jose did say starting tomorrow (meaning the 14th) and over the next few days, so...hopefully by Friday night PDT we will find out? Eh eh?

(Or maybe there are different days they sent out emails to those whose entries made it vs. those who didn't. Or it's randomized or one by one. You never know?)

Oh, don't worry, I understand. With 74 videos, that's a lot of emails to go out whether or not he's started working on it. And the coordinator is a great guy. I just have to vent my crazed excitement+anxiety out in small bursts or I'll flail around on the floor all day. :D

Wow, you got into some pretty tough categories! Congrats!

Mine got into Comedy so now I can stop stressing about getting in and start stressing about how well it's going to do. Anime Conji showed me my video has a chance so now I'm excited to see how the audience reacts to it.

I've brought multiple friends with me before. Usually there's more seating set aside for editors than necessary, and in recent years editors can basically sit wherever they like. Sometimes there's an area marked off for editors, but you don't HAVE to sit there. As they get closer to the end of general seating they let non-editors join the editor seating area. So one friend should be juuust fine. :D

I've always brought my friends with me to the showings, and I've never had an issue with it. The only time I ever remember sitting apart was back in 2010 during my first contest because I didn't know they could sit with me. They ended up sitting very close though.

To those of you who have gone to the showings in previous years, How many people usually watch the show?

Mr Matthew;

The show is on 2 days in 2 neighboring rooms. Friday tends to be the day with less viewers and the second room usually has less folks than the 1st. That being said, Friday has maybe on average 60-70% of each room full. Saturday is nuts since con population is higher on Saturdays. The 1st room often becomes 100% full with people lined up against walls and sitting around the projector; the 2nd room is always less full, but probably more full than it is on Fridays.

I don't know what the capacity on these 2 rooms are, but they're about average viewing room size. If you really want to see the best audience reaction and can only come on one day, come on Saturday and avoid room 2. I don't know why, but the second room tends to be kind of dead. Minimal applause and practically no reaction to comedy. It's kind of weird since the other room is overflowing with energy and excitement.

Hi everyone,
All the emails have gone out as of tonight! If you submitted something and haven't gotten something back, please let us know asap! Also, congrats to all of our finalists! This year was exceptionally tough as the level of entries got so much better across the board. Those of you who didn't make it this year should still be proud as well.

The Judge's Panel had nothing but great reviews on all of them. Unfortunately, we had to cut almost 5 hours of worth of entries into a 2 hour show! We tried out best to include as many as possible in this year's show. In fact, just a heads up if you're at the show, we got approval to go about 10 minutes past our original allotted time once we showed them how good this years videos were. I wish we could get more time for all of you. Again, with out all of you, we have no show and we appreciate all of your hard work!

I will be posting the official line up in a new post just like last year. You should all be very proud!

Title: Re: 2013 FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines!

Yep! They play the same list in both rooms. It's played in 2 rooms to make sure that everyone who wants to see it can, since it's a big event. (It used to play across the street @ the concert hall.)

They do play the categories in different order in each room, though. This is to prevent an audio lag-echo from coming through the wall and messing up the experience.

I was pretty weird hearing my video in the other room one year. I had to fight the urge to dash over and see it, but I didn't want to be disrespectful to the entries that were currently on the screen in my room.

It's going to be EXTRA hard this year though since mine is a comedy entries and seeing how people react to your video is pretty vital.

Hey, I hate to point fingers, but I was looking through your amvs on animemusicvideos.org and it would seem that one of your AMVs, namely "Unseen Hearts", has parts stolen from one of my own amvs.  I looked through them frame by frame just to confirm, and I am 100% confident that you have stolen parts.

The problem with this is, the amv that you stole from, "Chuunibyou - If I Had You" aka "Leather and Skirt", is a finalist in this very contest.
Unseen Hearts: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_vidpreview.php?v=191004
Leather and Skirt: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/members_vidpreview.php?v=190847

I will now list the parts in your video that you have stolen, for others to confirm as well:

As I am ABSOLUTELY Flattered that you felt the need to steal clips from my VERY FIRST AMV, I am extremely angry that you are participating in the Finals in the same category, "action", as myself.

I Only hope that the AMV that you have submitted to this contest was not made in the same way, by ripping off other peoples hard work.

*EDIT: It would seem that "RADX888" has deleted his youtube video, and will proceed to delete his video off of animemusicvideo as well.
Unfortunately for him, I downloaded it already and have others as witnesses.

Good job. I also downloaded the video last night figuring that'd probably happen. :/

I'm glad you caught this. I hope it's resolved the best way possible.

Thanks, If he hadn't posted on this forum, I never would have known.  I also found out that he submitted videos to Anime-Expo and informed them as well.
While looking through his profile, i spotted a peculiar journal entry:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/journal/default.php?mid=997923
Mix of the best parts
So since none of my videos have ever made it into finals for contests (or for that matter been very popular). One of my friends suggested to me that I use the best parts of my past AMV's and put them together in a new video. Which does sound like a decent idea but if people didn't like my video's before, why would anyone like to see the same video re-used? Of course I would use an entirely new sound track, and edit the video in a new way. But I don't have any other current ideas for new video's and honestly the average member on here that isn't associated with a studio is better than me. Is it worth a shot or a chance? Hmmmm beats me...

After reading that, It kinda made sense that he would use other peoples AMVs for his own.

I took my time watching both videos and comparing them and yeah, that's some pretty damming evidence. Wow... I can't imagine if someone did that with my videos. Makes me glad I've never deleted any of the project files for AMVs I've submitted to contests.

Well at least both Fanime and AX have this person's information. I don't know about Fanime but as far an AX is concerned he might be banned permanently from their competition.

I'm sorry this happened to you! I hope this does get dealt with quickly and efficiently.

Chucking in my vote with matthewgutz's side. Watched the videos myself last night with the worry that I wouldn't be able to tell exactly what was taken and what wasn't, but it was clear as day. The list with the changes/non-changes matched exactly with the timing that was provided. Many of the changes/non-changes were so painfully obvious it hurt, like the mask to the character with an eyepatch while another is riding a bike into the night.

Managed to grab a copy of the vid for evidence as well if need be. Also saved the page for the video information if he pulls it down from AMVs.org. I can provide both if needed.

Just saying as another editor (I wanted to enter this year, but chose not to so I could focus on my finals), this sort of behavior is disgraceful, and if Vlad gets wind of this I wouldn't surprised if we never see another video make it to the finals in almost any con from this editor again. Sorry you've had your editing and footage ripped off, gonna re-iterate Bm-Atticus and hope that this gets dealt with quickly.

Even if Vlad doesn't get involved, this guy has pretty much dropped off the face of the planet. I was trying to find his youtube account (which he deleted) and came across his twitter instead. I went to go grab some dinner and when I came back the account was gone.

Luckily he submitted to Anime-expo, where it was required to give them your full name, address, and phone number lol

I'd forgotten about that. Welp, yeah, that's kind of put a dead stop to his entries, unless he goes through someone else.

Part of me feels bad, but I'm more mad. You don't blatantly steal (a lot of) footage like that and claim it to be your own. That's not right in any sort of way, and I am glad this is getting out in the open. Does make me wonder if you're not the only person who's had their work taken - a lot of his footage did look spotty early on in the video.

Tch. Hiding, huh? Shows he's got a guilty conscience, I guess. Odd that his AMVs.org profile & videos are still there, but maybe they're harder to delete... I dunno.

IMO, he would've been better off publically and personally apologizing, withdrawing at least the stolen-material video from competition and hoping the AMV Contest Deities (coordinators) had mercy on him.

I've seen people on YT with blatantly-ripped-off videos posted as being theirs, but entering international competitions with stolen material is a whole 'nother ballgame. A stupid one.

Well, it certainly gives us something to discuss while we wait for Fanime to role around.

I think this whole incident is a good reminder to keep your project file, or screenshots of your work at various stages so if something like this should happen, you have all of your proof documented.

Hi everyone,
I'm about to post this year's line up on it's own post. We would like to address the issue regarding the sampling of other editor's AMV's. After much discussion and consideration it has been decided that the submission by that particular editor will remain in place for the following reasons:
a) While we can't condone the claiming other people's work as your own, the video submitted to FanimeCon was not the video that was being called into question, but rather a different AMV. We felt that since the particular AMV that was the subject of discussion was not submitted to us, it should not affect a separate entry. Had any evidence come to light about the video that was submitted to us, that editor and the entry would most certainly have been disqualified.

b) The second reason, but unfortunately one that is a reality, is that at the time that this info came to light, the line up had already been finaled, edited, rendered and sent to print at FanimeCon. Making additional alterations to the show so close to the start of Fanime would put us so close to the deadline that it could potentially run the risk of not being completed in time possibly having to cancel at least the Friday show. We feel that jeopardizing the hard work of our outstanding edtiors would be unfair.

I hope that you can see that this was not an easy call to make and that we will do our best to make sure that things like this are properly handled. Thanks.

For anyone still viewing this thread, the FMV Finals do NOT start seating @ 1 as stated on the site. They start playing them at 1. Show up at 12:30 or so if you want early seating for Saturday. I showed up "early" today at 1:15 and missed the first 3 videos. :(

Also, I doubt anything can be done about it since the coordinator is off-site, but the 2nd room has a playlist problem. It repeats a drama vid in the action category and skips the action vid that's supposed to be there entirely (the skipped vid was Magi, the Dayman) I feel badly for that editor... as an audience member near me said, they'll most likely lose by default, even if they're screened in the other room properly.

Oh, it's yours! So that's what happened! They put your Drama video twice. So the vid that had footage stolen from it played in place of your Action entry, but also in its proper place. That's a pretty big goof on their part.... Sorry dude :(

Thanks for bringing that up. I will call them at the Con and make sure they start the seating and the viewing at the proper time. I will see what I cab do about the playlist issue since it was all prerendered. We did make sure that they at least have all the individual submissions on site. We might at least be able to announce it and play it at the beginning of the show. I'll post on here as soon as I can get a confirmation of each.

Thanks for the response. The screening did start at the proper time today so that was a pleasant change. Also, there were pens available today while yesterday there only seemed to be one or two available... So that was also an improvement.

Unfortunately, nothing was changed with the screening of the duplicate/skipped videos. I wasn't there when the screening started so I don't know if it was explained or not but there were a lot of confused people when it played for the 2nd time. And of course the oddest thing is that due to the second room being Action, Drama, Comedy & then Experimental, we saw the video in Action before seeing it in its proper place.

I hope his Drama vid does well, at least. It was quite good.

I resent the proper video to the staff with instructions to make an announcement about it not being in the correct place in the show, that it was A-8 on the ballots and to play it first. According to the ballots we got, it seemed to work as it actually got quite a large number of votes.

This is after the fact, but I was never hiding from anyone. I changed and got rid of my accounts because even though I explained in great detail what I did not only to the editor of that AMV but also to the staff at Anime Expo, it was still taken the wrong way. And I believe I apologized to the guy on AMV.org too. And I told the staff of Fanime-con and the moderator of AMV.org and AnimeExpo to remove my entries when I found out that someone was displeased with what I did, which for the record this was taken out of context, "Mix of the best parts
So since none of my videos have ever made it into finals for contests (or for that matter been very popular). One of my friends suggested to me that I use the best parts of my past AMV's and put them together in a new video. Hmmmm beats me..."

When I wrote that, I looked towards other people's video's for inspiration and when I saw Leather and Skirt. To me, in my mind I saw parts of that video that would look good or be good, but told and used in a different way and this is where I told the editor, and explained that I did not simply copy and paste parts of his video but I made those parts of his video myself. I physically made it with Sony Vegas and CS4 and After Effects, exactly like how I saw it and then I combined that with other footage that I also edited to make a completely different (albeit not individually unique) AMV. I told the staff of AnimeExpo if I wanted to steal that person's work, I would have just put my name on the whole Leather and Skirt video, like what someone referenced that people do on Youtube. To be honest I think our video's are completely different even though I used the same scenes. Which I also tried to argue like how many of you have seen an action AMV where the same footage is used? Yet it's by different editors, and completely different videos, nobody cries about copying each other in that instance. I was just trying to make a romance AMV, and I just saw a different use for the same scenes. But I still spent the time and actually edited it from RAW footage. I'm sorry it was the same, it was not my intention to rip-off that person's video, I was just so striving to do something different, and I thought I could implement the styles of other AMV editors into my own videos, to which I regret I took that thinking too far. And that was it, after that I stopped making AMV's and by policy AMV.org won't delete an account because they seek to keep an archive of videos. Do I still make videos? Yeah, I made another Youtube channel, I'm still an anime fan, I still like editing things and since then I've tried editing different things. I've apologized how many times for inconveniencing these contests and the conventions. So for one final time. I"M SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Radx888, I'm not going to go into too much detail in my response here, because 1) It wasn't my video you stole from, and 2) I don't want this post to be construed as flaming. While it's good you finally responded and pulled your video from competition, I have to reply to your rationalization for what you did.

Quote
To be honest I think our video's are completely different even though I used the same scenes. Which I also tried to argue like how many of you have seen an action AMV where the same footage is used? While I see what you're getting at, your analogy here is just wrong. You're comparing 2 different videos using the same scenes from an anime to what you did. It's not the same. You took footage from matthewgutz, all of which he'd edited to his liking, and threw it into your own video. Your analogy is like if someone sat down, made a collage from a specific magazine, and then someone else sat down and made their own collage from the same magazine and the first guy called it plagiarism. It wouldn't be. But if the second guy sat down, took the first guy's collage and cut out the parts he liked and slapped it into his own collage whole, that'd be plagiarism and that's what you did.

Quote
I was just trying to make a romance AMV, and I just saw a different use for the same scenes. But I still spent the time and actually edited it from RAW footage.

Erm, no. If someone edits the footage and you take that footage, it's not raw. It's pre-edited.

Quote

Ok, this is where you really lose me. You wanted to do something "different", and you literally copied portions of the matthewgutz's work to do something "different"? That makes no sense. If you want to implement the styles of other editors into your own work, learn how to do what they did and do it that way. I'm pretty sure most editors have seen another person's AMV at some point, seen an interesting effect or editing style and tried to emulate that on their own in their next video. They try to recreate it for themselves and learn the skill rather than simply swiping the footage from the original vid.

It's ok to use the same scenes as someone else, it's not ok to download their amv and take the edited scenes from it however.  The fact is, even if you did attempt to copy parts of the video it would not look exactly the same in those areas, there would be some discrepancies.  You said you used "Sony Vegas and CS4 and After Effects" to replicate the scenes when all I used was sony vegas..  The big give away was the masked scene though.  Most people would mask the lines, but I decided to be lazy (it was my first amv gimme a break D;)  and just do a rough mask of her head.

Anyways, it seems that you're sorry and this was so long ago I completely forgot.
As long as you don't do it to other people and you learned your lesson I think its fine.

If you really want to make amvs the best way to get better is just practice.
Make goals for each of your videos to improve yourself as an editor.
Fanime was the first contest I submitted to and first I won, and since then I've continued to make more amvs.
It's been almost a year since I made that chuunibyou amv and I've won a lot of contests around the world: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtzRMwc6A6ZddGduQzBOV3pZbktyTE0wZndiOXZxWXc&usp=sharing#gid=0

Don't steal from other people, make something different, make something that stands out.
I sincerely hope you learn something from this and maybe even continue making videos of your own.
Title: Re: 2013 FMV Contest Rules and Guidelines!
Post by: RADX888 on December 03, 2013, 05:45:41 PM
Well, I just wanted to reply with my response in the matter. I don't have the same computer I used when I made that video so I can't prove the fact that I watched your video and then watched the episodes of Chuunibyou, and then downloaded those episodes and then edited it side-by-side to match, so that is what I meant Foester by "raw footage" because I edited it from the actual episodes and if you can't tell that their is differences, well that is nothing to brag about that I did a good job copying something frame for frame. You mentioned you use only Sony Vegas but I was just mentioning that I use different programs like CS4 because I think doing layers and masking is easier in it, well not easier but it's just the program that I am familiar with for doing that. And I could argue this point until I am blue in the face, but it doesn't matter and it is not worth it and like I said I regret doing that video in that sort of way but what bothers me is the content that we all use in the making of AMV's we don't own any of it. So even though it's your video and you used those scenes, I don't understand how editors and the AMV community can call it plagiarism when neither you or me or any editor owns the copyright to any of it. Like I said, if I wanted to steal or copy your video I wouldn't have gone through the effort and made my own. And this was something I had e-mail conversations with a member of the Anime-Expo staff about, and their is an underlining rule that you can't modify the work of someone else's video, but my question is if any editor uses something (scenes) that are the same but in a different way, I guess why is that bad when 9/10th's of my video was entirely different? I don't know, if it was something simple like collages like the analogy that Foester used, I don't think anybody would care if two collages had the same pictures but since this was for a competition and so it comes down to picking one video over another. Then yeah, what I did their was quite an extreme backlash of reaction towards this. So in the end I agree, I'm the bad guy and so I decided not to do AMV's ever again and probably for the better and my focus is elsewhere now anyway. I listed my different Youtube channel in the previous comment and I'm going to try to focus on that and doing video blogs after I finish college (hopefully from Japan). So you mentioned that you won there and you deserved it.
