Title: Fanime Speed Dating 2008
Post by: Zorya on July 17, 2007, 06:48:55 PM
This a potentially very bad idea, but as long as people sign some sort of "No Rape" waiver, I think this could be a way to join some of the lonely people at Fanime with the Guy/Girl/Fairy/Box of Pocky of their dreams . . .

Non-heterosexuals may want to leave now and organize their own threads, because this doesn't really work for same-sex speed dating, sorry.

Basically, what I'm thinking is, we have an equal number of guys and girls register for this sort of an event, and then set up a bunch of chairs and tables in a circle.
The girls sit in a circle and talk to whatever guy is in front of them deciding whether they like them or not. The guys move from chair to chair every three minutes. If they decide they like each other, they can exchange contact information before the guy moves on.

All parties agreeing to such a system would have to agree that by participating they clear Fanime, the people involved, etc. of any and all blame for anything that may result of the event.

But let's face it, a lot of people at Fanime would like to spend it with someone new.

Comments/Constructive Criticism encouraged.

Wait a second. You mean I didn't sign one of those when I was born?

I'll be very busy for the next few days, then

Of course! No one is stopping you from doing whatever you want!

But the other part of that is, it can also happen to you . . . especially when you drop the soap in the showers at Buttsex County Jail . . .

This has the potential to do great things, and yet at the same time to cause many problems.

again i would heavily stress on the common sense deceny here...

but then again with all fan boys and girls... well... thats out the window.  ::)

ppl have a tendancy tomake friends on their own.

as for dating and other activities... behind closed doors.

thats where we should leave it at that.  :P

Hah, sometimes people do find the one they like at Fanime.  Either by meeting them for the first time, or by a friend.  Practically, it can happen however!  Although Speed Dating would bring them all together, it seems like they could just be made without it as well.  I met my boyfriend at Fanime through a game tournament, and  how things happened, it all turned out great!  But, all in all, I agree wit everyone that this could potentially be a bad idea, but you never know until you try it.

I am perpetually single (big surprise)...but even so I'd be a bit nervous to try this.  This kind of thing can go badly...and we're all going to be in the same place for the whole weekend.  I don't vote against the idea...I'm just not sure I'd take part in it.

There's a immense amount of minor attendees that go to this con. You might want to be careful with this idea.

Post by: MonkeyRikku on October 30, 2007, 10:13:16 AM
This does have potential to work if you plan it out a bit better than you have thus far.

Like StrawberryNeko said, there's some minors attending, so you might want people to show an ID proving they are at least 17 (thats the official consensual age in most courts of California). Also, you may want to consider the information sharing after the talking, like they do with SD on tv. girls get cards, rate the guys (on things like cleanliness or whatever they want), if the rating is high there is info shared, simple.

you'd also have to decide which gender you would prefer to have seated and which you would prefer to move. I also recommend doing this later on in the day as to deter any younger kids or random spectators from watching like participants are in a zoo.

which we really are.

Hmmm, speed dating...speed and dating never mixed well with me...but anywho thats besides the point.

The idea of helping people interact with strangers in a control environment is very fun.  Remember kids first impression count the most.  But  if I may I would like to throw a suggestion.  I know that many guys have their special anime girl they like and the same goes for girls they have there special anime boy they like.  My suggestion is if you can get enough people to do it, have like a special theme session were either all the guys or girls participating are cosplaying as one character.  But just a random idea.  But over all I say this is a good idea, some people are shy to talking to strangers so this will give them a chance to find someone awesome or just gain courage to talk to more random strangers.  And friends coming out of this is always a good thing :D

Actually, the idea of a Cosplay Speed Dating could be a fun event for all. You cosplay a character, someone else cosplays a character, and you have to try and act In Character doing the date. Could be like a competition, and the audience could vote on who portrayed the characters best and the best couple and stuff. But that's just kind of a digression.

Rule #1.  Never date the people that you work with.

Rule #2.  Never violate Rule #1.

Rule #3.  If you violate Rule #1, be prepared to deal with the results of a break up at Staffing Meetings and At-Con, where you two are very likely going to have to interact and not want to tear out each others heart and eat it in front of the other person.

Rule #4.  No Killing the other person at Staff Meetings or At-Con, because our insurance wouldn't cover the damage to the carpets.

Rule #5.  For the Females in the group, consider the fact that almost all the males in the thread think it's a good idea, while the females are on the fence.  Remember women, date only in your own Species.  If you watch "The Big Bang Theory" Television series, we (the males on this thread) are one rung below those guys, notice I didn't say above them.

Rule #6.  ....Just don't do it, just say no...

hey don't ruin it for the high school kids, very possibly the first girl that I'm ACTUALLY in love with will most likely reject me  :( ,so if she does on Valentine's Day because I have some heavy shite planned for her on that day, I might join the speed dating if she rejects me  :(

Now, the question is for the 18 and up thing, what if a participant will be turning 18 within a matter of days after the con? Will they be able to slide by, or will they be screwed?

I would imagine for legal reasons they would have to be 18 or older at the time of the event. I see the primary problem being participation. While I am sure they will have plenty of males willing to sign up I have a feeling finding female participants will be trickier. As was noted earlier, the male response to this event has been significantly more positive then the female response. Though as long as the event was held in a safe and controlled location I think I would be willing to try even as shy as I tend to be around women.

All the participants should definitely be over 18, and it probably shouldn't be advertised as a serious way to hook-up.  Keep it clean and legal.  ;)  Fun and games, y'all.  Maybe offer prizes or special seating.

The idea of an Anime Dating Game catches my interest more- probably more interesting for the onlookers as well, especially if you toss in yaoi/yuri versions (taking the character's gender, not the actual participant's).

I will agree with you about that in love age doesnt matter.  But when it comes to law and stuff...well it kinda does.  We dont want some parent coming to staff and complaning that their son or daughter was being touched by an older man or woman.  So suggestion for minors  is bring your parent or guardian perferably, or maybe a sign document allowing their minor to participate but in their speed dating it will all be minors.  That way their is little to no issues.

As for the girls in here being against the idea, well from experience I've meet many single girls who go to fanime who would like to meet new guys but are to shy.  Yes, this may also mean that they will be to shy to participate, but their is also a chance that they might decide to come...or a group of girls.  But yea.  I still think is an interesting idea, just afraid that their will be 40 guys and like 10 girls showing up.

I've never really seen an Otaku thats 40, I usually see Otakus that are in their 20's or early 30's. But yeah you're right, I didn't mean it in that way. As you said about those are girls that wanna meet new guys but are too shy about, I'm one of those people except its the other way around, a single guy that wants to meet new girls but I am too shy. Ok so the issue with minors is over! Done! minors can't particapate PERIOD!

dude would lay off a bit. this speed dating is for fun, not to be in a committed relationships with the girl. not many people commit the first day they meet him/her. obviously from your postings it seems like your going through some heart break issues right now and joining in on this for u might not be the best idea. or it might be who knows. but yea man don't take things too personally, we are jst here to have fun and be mind full of the rules and law, we don't want anyone here heading to jail cuz one of us wanted to kiss the other person against their will.

So what exactly will someone need to get this organized?

My thoughts:

-Tables + chairs
-a room/area
-organizer
-timer
-rules
-people
-a system to sit people

Now who was trying to organize this again?

and a thought of cosplay dating, I think if that is really going to be tried we should have like a schedule were you have advertisement like
One Piece Men 1-2...(or for the case of not being sexest One Piece Women...and no not like wearing a one piece or something, but rather the anime)

to the system of sitting people is it going to be guys sat first and then girls are sat filling up the spots?  Do they have a choice to not sit?  or will the girls be sitted first and then guys come in?

And final thoughts, speed dating is not about finding a relationship.  More like finding a new friend, maybe get a dinner date.  Not saying that it has never happen, but in my opinion do not get your hopes to high.  Just come and have fun :D.  And remember guys sometimes is better to be happy than right :P

There are alot of pros and cons on this matter so because it does have the possibility of going south if it were speed dating so to speak... There is another similar idea... like for example.... Fanime Friends Finding Friends. This is basicly the same idea BUT  putting it up as friends so that Fanime does not take initial responsibility IF said new friends become more so.  ;)  Once they meet as friends what they do after is tween them.
Maybe I got the whole concept wrong on this speed dating but this is my two cents. The way I see it is if you got an idea put it out on the table.

I think that a good idea. A fanime friend finder speed thingy o.0 I've been attending fanime for 2 years, I go with my girlfriend and group of friends, and I like to meet kool new people who enjoy the same thing I do games manga etc. This can be a good way to make things easier for people who are shy to just go up to random people and conversate. And if things end up in people "hooking up" then the con and the people who run it are not responsible because its a friend finding service thingy. I think that that's one of the big draws for attending a con to meet like minded people. I would like to help make this happen.

Maybe run it after 10 PM and have an 18+ check like with the hentai rooms.

Doing it with members under 18 is really...really kinda dumb. Especially if the one that they like came from far away or a city or two over. Boo hoo teenage heartache long distance relationship and a bunch of drama that wasn't really necessary.

Granted, 18+ dating games may be the same way, but at least it's more likely to be addressed seriously then "We'll email each other every day! T_T"

Could be fun. Just don't toss in minors.

i think it is an excellent idea.  Fanime is a place where people of similar interest converge and celebrate one shared love - anime.  and people who like anime tend to like the same things and have compatible personality.  If we can siphon out those who are spoken for by having a speed dating venue, and actually condition people to not have rejection be that big a deal.

I disagree with the characterization of con goers as somehow inhuman.  Some are, yes, but when they face the deterrent of having the cops called and their badge stripped, they will ease off and slink back to the dark moldy corner of the hentai room they came from.

I think that restricting this to people 18 and older though as a precaution would be a prudent course of action.

I mean, going to Fanime = common interest.
Plus, how cool is it to say "Hey guys (who think I'm a complete nerd for going to fanime). I just made 6854321352468 friends and probably have met more girls/boys than you have in your lifetime."

The problem with a session for 16yrs old...where there is two problems.

-First off parents.  If the parents find out and they don't approve, well fanime gets in trouble.
-Second, to my surprise a lot of people who go to fanime do not have a valid ID (state issued ID, drivers Licence, military, etc).  Pretty much something that says how old you are.  Yes to an extent school ID's would work to saying who you are but not necesaraly how old.

The thing about cosplay was just an idea thrown out there to add a little spunk to the fun.

I'm not condoning not to have 16yr old speed "dating", we just have to find a way to get parental approval.  And wavier forms I'm not to supported off because come on, I've sign my parents signature multiple times :P...yes I was a bad kid growing up

Even some good kids out there have forged there parents signature. I"m not saying I was a good kid, but I knew a few that have pulled that move off.

HaHa..interesting idea...definately no minors cause I would be put in jail...hahaha  I am 24, but I saw a singled out type thing at AX a few years ago and the winners got some dvd's and stuff...it was really fun to play and there was a large turnout.  Speed dating may be fun...but would you go into a specific group...like boy/ boy..girl/boy...girl/girl...or a mix of everyone?

who didn't forge?? lololol. anyways...
yeah, i'm sure my parents would be okay, since there's security at fanime..
but i never see the security... :[[[[
I agree with the id. But maybe that should be a rule then: must have a valid id to register
for speed dating. Mmmhm.

I'd love to do this!!! Though trying to get an equal numbers of guys and gals together would be tough and what to do about minors? but if you set it up I will come.

ooh sounds fun  ;D  I definately would be kind of creeped out with speed dating and the older anime fans..LOL  me personally I am 25 and would definately want to see some ID..LoL  ::)
But let me know if it's going to happen...I am down.  It would be fun though with the 18+ hentai thing...but then would that be speed dating or speed something else..LOL

sorry but i'm not gonna read all the posts on this forum ^^;; but here's my insight ...

i myself think it's has its pros and cons. pros being that you can meet new people and cons ... well, the cons outweigh the pros pretty much.

i think a much better idea (i say better, not good) idea would be a date auction. and the money from the date auction will go to fanime or even to a charity of the person's choice. and yeah ... the "date" location would be at the fanime ball. i think it'll be a cute idea like, some fan girl can buy L or tuxedo mask or whoever is up for auction.

of course, the cons would still outweigh the pros. and comparing to speed dating, i don't think someone would wanna pay for a date (except an otaku) and you would still have to go through all the other stuff like legal age, people that participate "as a joke", etc

plus, i think it would be easier to find someone more compatible for you (friend or "more than friends") through speed dating

oh gosh i think i just contradicted myself. lol

pro:get new friends
con:err i dunno rlly phone numbers and long distance pen pals maybe?
or you can do this still and make cards and people will fill in the type of friend you want you know like if you want a friend who loves pokeman or some other type of thing or type of music you like thing is
Con:16+ or 17+
cause next year im turning 17  :P
