GLADSTONE, Ore. — A 16-year-old boy whose parents rely on prayer instead of medical care has died following an illness marked by stomach pains and shortness of breath, authorities said.

Officers and a deputy medical examiner were called to the family's house about an hour after the boy's death late Tuesday afternoon, said Sgt. Lynne Benton of the Gladstone Police Department. Gladstone is located south of Portland.

Benton said the boy was surrounded by family when he died and a board member of the Followers of Christ church contacted the authorities.

The boy got sick about a week ago and — like all members of the religious order — did not receive medical attention. His condition worsened Sunday and members of the church gathered for prayer, Benton said.

An autopsy is planned.

In March, the boy's 15-month-old cousin, Ava Worthington, died at home from bronchial pneumonia and a blood infection. Her parents, Carl and Raylene Worthington, also failed to contact a doctor and are awaiting trial on criminal charges in her death.

No arrests have been made in the latest case, but the information will be forwarded to the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office for review, Benton said.

Oregon lawmakers passed new laws striking down legal shields for faith healing parents after several children from the Followers of Christ church died in the 1990s.

The Oregon City church is not associated with a mainstream denomination.

Now now, lets not get lazy.

Actually, most forums have people have the courtesy to copy and paste the article along with the corresponding link, but whatever.

While I'm opposed to religious fanatics and stupidity, and have a very cynical stance in religion and spirituality in general, I do like the idea of something instilling hope unto those who are willing to believe it... but f*ck, some common sense, please. Lives are at stake. :|

As a counterpoint, some forums also either forbid copy-pasting the story or limit it to only portions of the article, and rightly so.  There are some legitimate concerns regarding fair use vs. copyright.  To be on the safe side, if you must post the article, post only a portion of it since fair use covers that.  It doesn't cover posting the whole article and can get folks in trouble if the publishers of the original article object.

There is a thing called a "paraphrase."

Now onto the story:
Its very sickening. Especially since the parents of this boy were relatives of the girl that died. They should take a extremely close look at this religious community.

Have someone keeping an eye on the kids and have a mandatory check-up whenever the children seem to "disappear" into their houses; aka when no one has seen them when they should have been seen at school, at their normal activities, clubs, etc.

That is a good idea but most kids from fanatic religions like this are home schooled and only associate with church members. But a caseworker to do random checks might be a good start.

See, there's a fine line between "Pray for it" and "HOLY CRAP CALL AN AMBULANCE". Would it really be that hard to imagine, from their OWN perspectives, that maybe God gifted some people with the knowledge and ability to practice high-quality medical procedures (I.E, steady eyes/hands, interest in and capacity for medical knowledge, etc.)?

Just a hunch.
Haven't been here much since '09. I said some stupid, stupid things before (and after) that.

This particular incident?  No.  However, this isn't the first time that a kid involved with this sect ended up dead thanks to its teachings.  There was another death not that long ago.

Bloody idiots, the lot of them. They should at least given him medical attention and do their religious thing too. Do you think their was a point when he begged his parents to take to the hospital? If he did and if there was proof, then the parents would be able to be thrown in jail.

Alright either these people care about their religion more than their loved ones or they rely on God too much. Religion isn't always NO it never is the answer to problems, it makes things worse. Damn bible beaters can't get that through their heads.

Regardless of whether or not he begged them, they would be sent to jail, anyway. They're parents who neglected their child's need for medical attention, and the result was death. Such is considered as extreme child abuse, and I'm pretty sure it was also mentioned that they're awaiting trail for receiving criminal charges.

Augh. As an athiest, I still try to maintain being somewhat unbiased between others' beliefs but man... this website made me want to throw up. Not even lol (well, maybe the kid's art gallery. lmao)

After looking through it in my boredom, I really hope that I just got trolled and that people in the religious community aren't this retarded. Don't really know anymore, since they managed to have their stupidity cause the lives of little children. :|
