I have a quick question about the karaoke at Fanime. My friends and I want to sing something as a group (there are six of us) and the song is about four minutes. Will this be a problem?

Hank-KKD

Shouldn't be as long you don't mind sharing microphones (we usually have 3 or so mics on stage)

Armored-Heart

And as long as you don't plan on singing the Pokemon theme. Seeing as that was banned this year. xD So was Never Gonna Give You Up and a couple other songs if I'm not mistaken. lmao
Not attending for 2014. Sorry!

nerd-chan

Nah, don't worry - we wanted to sing something from Rocky Horror, because I hear cosplayers have done that in the past.

Hank-KKD

Just a bit of off-season advice: If you want to sing a bannedvery popular song, such as the Pokemon theme, do it early in the convention. If you ask on Saturday/Sunday night and everyone's already heard it 393951285 times, we might just politely suggest that you consider a different song.

What about if you're singing a song from an old, very obscure anime that no one except a few loyal and dedicated fans of the work have likely heard of?

Then we will applaud your taste in old, obscure anime. If you look at our song book you'll actually see quite a few songs from such series.

Is it possible to choose a song, but turn it into a parody? (ie Take the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" theme but twist the lyrics to make it Anime related.)

The first time I Karaoke'd at Fanime was last year, but you can bring your own music if you want? Cause if so, I got a performance that will blow the socks off of all of you! And it is mostly Japanese related...

I look forward to this year's contest...but here's a rather unusual question: Are songs originally ripped from LP records allowed?

You have pretty much always been able to bring in your own CD. I think the past couple of ears have allowed iPods as well, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I have a bit of a question, and I know the answer, but I'm asking anyway:
Will the contest rules be pretty much the same? My ideal song is a cover of a Western song (JiLL-Decoy's cover of Happy Ever After), and covers have not been allowed in the past, so before I plan on anything, I'd like to know if the rules will be the same. (Also, why are covers banned from the contest, out of sheer curiosity?)

Are there ever situations where people who know the song too jump on stage and start singing? lol I'll sing Memories by Maki Otsuki, that first ending song of One Piece ^^

I had a question, not sure if it's been answered before or not, but I read in the rules that Jpop/Jrock was allowed in the contest. I was wondering if a Japanese song by a Korean artist or group would be okay. For example TVXQ/DBSK, Boa, and many other Korean artists have performed several of their hits in Japanese, some of which were made for or used in animes. So would those kinds of songs be allowed?

I remember a few years ago me and my friend were singing to be a man from mulan and a couple of the audience members jumped on the stage with me and started singing. It was really fun and funny when they did, lol

This is fine. Just like if a song from a series is done by a Western band but used in an anime/drama or something of the such, or if it's an cover by a JP band. (i.e. Franz Ferdinand was used for the ED of Paradise Kiss, Oasis for the OP of Higashi no Eden, Acidman covered Colors of the Wind from Pocahantos).

Basically, if it was a JP domestic release then it is OK. So let's take something that isn't ok. Kara(Korean girl group) released Mister in Korea and Japan. You would be able to sing the Japanese version of Mister, but not the Korean version as that was not a domestic Korean release where as the JP language one was.

Realistically just try to be reasonable. There's ways to be a douche and loophole things to qualify a song, but please try not to do that, it's really annoying and stuff. Just think logically. "Does this song fit in at an anime con karaoke contest"? Otherwise you find douches loopholing things like... Wannabe by the spice girls because it was used on a DDR version only for one mix on the console release. (heh heh heh).

Thank you for answering! And I understand about people trying to find loop holes. :\  I was wondering really just for the songs that had been officially released in Japan by Korean artists. Like you were saying with the Japanese version of Mister. So I'm glad to know that the Japanese versions are allowed.

I have a question about the contest, as it seems perhaps the rules are not the same as 2009?  Would Fly Me to the Moon, which was released in Japan as a single and used as teh ending to Evangelion, be allowed to be sung in the karaoke contest?

just as a random question: when do sign-ups happen again?

I was wondering the same thing (only not that specfic song, another cover). Covers haven't been allowed for as long as I can remember. After I posted my question, Mikey said that covers are allowed. So have the rules changed, or is Mikey mistaken?
