I did a few years where I got the cheapest/only vacant hotel in the area and ended up having to walk two miles to the con each way. It's not fun. You usually have to walk through bad neighborhoods, and if you're in cosplay you generate a lot of unwanted attention, and in addition to that, if you ever get totally exhausted in the con almost to the point of fainting and you decide you really need sleep you don't have the convenience of simply walking to the other end of the con center or a short distance and up the elevator to your bed. Instead you have to walk a couple of miles or risk crashing in public.

I highly recommend you go for a hotel that is in close vicinity and pay the extra money. Get friends and split the night fee.

I agree with Long. Since you're planning on staying the entire convention, you're better off paying the extra money for convenience. If you're splitting between three people, it'll probably run about $150-170 per person.

Very sound advice.

If you're okay with walking a mile or so (and this really depends on the person - I walk several miles a day just running errands and whatnot, but some people are not comfortable doing so, especially in hot heavy costumes) there's the Arena Hotel, it's where I've booked, but I honestly don't know a lot about it. http://www.pacifichotels.com/arena/index.html

It looks a bit like it's in need of redecorating, but the reviews say it's clean, comfy, and the staff is really nice. I'm paying $69 a night for a king with kitchenette and jacuzzi in the room, but I think to get that rate you have to book four nights in a row or more. There's also a free breakfast -and- dinner buffet, but they don't seem terribly glamorous. Pizza, mac & cheese, etc. But it does sound convenient and cheap! They also have rooms with two queens for $79 a night, according to the reservation page.

It's also on the other side of the Guadalupe Parkway, so it also depends how comfortable you are walking under a big old expressway. Again, I'm chill with it since where I live (Montreal, QC) there's big old expressways EVERYWHERE, but I know some people might not be keen on it.

This is not an official con hotel, so you can't book through the housing group, but their direct staff is friendly enough from what little I've dealt with them.
