Cake request for 3-year-old Hitler namesake denied

LINK

Full Story

AP – Heath Campbell, left, with his wife Deborah and son Adolf Hitler, 3, pose in Easton, Pa.,, Tuesday, Dec. … EASTON, Pa. – The father of 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell, denied a birthday cake with the child's full name on it by one New Jersey supermarket, is asking for a little tolerance. Heath Campbell and his wife, Deborah, are upset not only with the decision made by the Greenwich ShopRite, but with an outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article over the weekend on their flare-up over frosting.

"I think people need to take their heads out of the cloud they've been in and start focusing on the future and not on the past," Heath Campbell said Tuesday in an interview conducted in Easton, on the other side of the Delaware River from where the family lives in Hunterdon County, N.J.

"There's a new president and he says it's time for a change; well, then it's time for a change," the 35-year-old continued. "They need to accept a name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did."

Deborah Campbell, 25, said she phoned in her order last week to the ShopRite. When she told the bakery department she wanted her son's name spelled out, she was told to talk to a supervisor, who denied the request.

Karen Meleta, a spokeswoman for ShopRite, said the Campbells had similar requests denied at the same store the last two years and said Heath Campbell previously had asked for a swastika to be included in the decoration.

"We reserve the right not to print anything on the cake that we deem to be inappropriate," Meleta said. "We considered this inappropriate."

The Campbells ultimately got their cake decorated at a Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania, Deborah Campbell said. About 12 people attended the birthday party on Sunday, including several children who were of mixed race, according to Heath Campbell.

"If we're so racist, then why would I have them come into my home?" he asked.

The Campbells' other two children also have unusual names: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell turns 2 in a few months and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell will be 1 in April.

Heath Campbell said he named his son after Adolf Hitler because he liked the name and because "no one else in the world would have that name." He sounded surprised by all the controversy the dispute had generated.

Campbell said his ancestors are German and that he has lived his entire life in Hunterdon County. On Tuesday he wore a pair of black boots he said were worn by a German soldier during World War II.

He said he was raised not to avoid people of other races but not to mix with them socially or romantically. But he said he would try to raise his children differently.

"Say he grows up and hangs out with black people. That's fine, I don't really care," he said. "That's his choice."

Y'know, I think that there should be a warning on every birth certificate to be filled out, right about where the blank line is for filling in the baby's name.  The warning should be along the lines of "The child you're about to name may eventually be responsible for choosing the nursing home you'll be spending your final days in.  Choose carefully."

it's amazing the names people give their children.  The following examples are all children I know under the age of 10

Micheal Jackson
Christina Aguilara
Ricki Martin
Aargon
Rice Vader  (Vader's bad enough...but it IS the families last name..but they named for poor child RICE for Pete's Sake.  I suppose it's better then naming him Luke or something...sigh)

I know one kid who actually has 12 middle names....12!!

Some parents are crazy.  I admit that some names are family names and famous people screw them up...but really it's ridiculous.

I thank God every year we don't enroll a Harry, a Ron and a Hermione.

This guy has a screwed up sense of humor. I don't see him as a racist, but as an annoying person who probably likes to get on people's nerves.

At this point I'm wondering what kind of person would name their child after a fascist dictator. Besides, when you ask for a swastika to be included on your child's birthday cake, you know something is up, even if the name wasn't intended to be racist >>. You could probably get away with a swastika symbol in India, but I'm doubtful about it in America.

This discussion actually reminds me of this girl in my middle school who was named Jennifer Lopez, though I'm thinking it was more coincidental than intentional.

People need to stop naming their kids whatever the stupid hell thing they want, with no thought or inclination towards the effect that a name has on the child for the rest of their lives.

GAH.

My name is Steve Young. Normal name, however being the same name as a Hall of Fame 49er's Quarterback in the Bay Area = lots and lots of jokes/teasing as a child/ what have you. Teachers and other adults are just as guilty as kids when the teasing starts.

Think before you fill in that birth certificate.

Ah, poor kid. It must really suck to have a name like that, and not even get a cake for his birthday. ;_;

I feel that having a name you like is very important. It sucks to have a name you don't identify with. Like with me, I don't really have any name or alias I actually feel that I identify with, but I can't go nameless. Jun-Watarase was an IRC nick that people gave me, and since I met Mikey, he's introduced me to everyone as Jun and it sort of stuck, despite it being a rather plain and androgynous name.

I have several names. My English one is Melissa, my Japanese one is Kasumi (かすみ), and my Chinese name (which no one seems to never call me or remember) is Jiang Yee (静儀) which is read as Shizugi (しずぎ) in Jappo, which is why Mikey refers to me personally as Shizu. Also, unusually enough, my surname is Vietnamese, which is Lenh, pronounced Lin (凌) in Chinese, because of my biological father whose family migrated from Taiwan to China to Vietnam, so I have no Vietnamese blood in me. My mother is getting married soon, so my surname will thankfully change to Sun (孫) fairly soon. I don't identify with any of my given names, though, and it is a horrible feeling... not having a name you identify with, not having one word that simply represents who you are like most other people already have their entire lives. I've gone through so many nicknames and handles, it's ridiculous, and I don't even have any of those that I feel comfortable with. I'll be legally changing it soon, since my last name will change as well, but I still have yet to come across anything that I feel is right.

And for this kid, it's going to suck. Not only will he have trouble identifying himself, but he'll also be ridiculed, hated, and ostracized from society because his parents were retarded f*cks with no consideration for their kid. Though, in normal cases, it's pretty silly how some parents get worked up over choosing a name and thinking up scenarios of how kids may or may not bully them because of name. I doubt Hitler would be getting as worked up about looking for a name ike I do, though. He'll probably get extremely sick and tired of his name from his guaranteed horrible life and just give no f*cks and be like "F*ck it. I'm changing it to Jonh."

His sister is "JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell"?

......Aryan Nation?  ...And he says he just liked the sound of "Adolf Hitler"?

I'm all for "a name's a name", but this doesn't quite seem like the whole truth.  T_T

At least the kid's name is a name. Remember that celebrity (I forgot who) that named her daughter "Big Apple"

I found this, it was from two months ago. Oh the hilarity!

Apple.
Yeah, Gwenythe(sp?) Paltrow and that singer from Coldplay's kid.  Celebrities were giving their kids ESPECIALLY weird names around this time...  lol

I've been working as a server for about 5 years and see some AWESOME names:
Laura Fuchs
some guy with the last name "Moran" (pronounced ..."moron".  I went up with "Mr. Mo-ran" and they laughed and corrected me, "nope, I'm a 'More-ron'. "

Uh...shoot, I can't remember my favorite.  It was actually a server I worked with's customer, but it was great!  Dammit...
Oh well.

This story reminds me of the New Zealand judge that made the parents change the name of their daughter to something normal. Originally they had named her Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. =/ Poor kid.

Here's the article which I think was posted here before. But here it is again since it relates. New Zealand: Judge orders name change for girl called Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

Even if the parents didn't intend it to be racist, in this society it will be taken as racist. That kid will have a hard time in life because of that name. >_< Think people before breeding and naming!

"Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii"! I thought it couldn't get worse until I actually read the article. "Yeah Detroit" / "Fish and Chips" / "Sex Fruit"?!!

It seems to go back to the parents needing to think of their children more. They don't need to overanalyze every name and its meaning to get the perfect name. But it's not a joke nor something to be taken too lightly. Just because you like "Fish and Chips"....  Argh!  Can't even put my head around that one. Maybe he introduces himself as:

"Hi, my name is Fish and Chips. But you can call me John"

(Not that I think ""Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii" is any better, but she can at least shorten it to Talula)

Naming a child Hitler in its self is not wrong, but indeed, these parents must have known that such things would have happened.
