I was surprised to not see some kind of discussion on this, but I suppose it just goes to support one theory. Are these games losing popularity just because they are so overdone and they have been around for so long? Or were they just never that popular to begin with? With Dynasty Warriors having gone from the original to Dynasty Warriors 6 with Xtreme Legends and Empires expansions put in periodically, is Koei just beating a dead horse? There was a small gathering of DW characters at Fanime this year, but still, with the wide range of characters there is someone for everyone to love, isn't there? And there weren't any Samurai Warriors characters, unfortunately. Perhaps I'll make that a project for 2010.

What is your opinion on why these games are still somehow being produced, and do you think they should be discontinued?

Also, share some highlights from the games if you've ever enjoyed them. Favorite characters, favorite battles, favorite game from the series, whatever you care to share.

I love Dynasty Warriors Series! My favorite one right now has to Orochi Warriors. But IMO if they want to really make the game better instead constantly making expansion packs, they should do DLC instead. If you think about it, nobody wants to buy a new game that has only minor changes. And I wish atleast have gore in it! How long will it take them to realize that's what most gamers want from a hack n slash game.

I'll add in my favs in another time.

Currently trying to get Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2! I can't believe it's still sold out in my area!

I'm surprised something like that is sold out. The first DW: Gundam wasn't great, but it was fun for a while. But there are copies of DW:G2 everywhere near me. I suppose a certain amount of gore would be a good idea, but I think it would look better in the cut-scenes. Like when you defeated an officer in the old games and it would cut away to them either running away or dying, it would be interesting to see them injured or a little bloody. Or perhaps in something like the ending sequence for Sima Yi when he is killing Cao Cao there could be some blood running down his robe, etc. I don't know, the games have never been bloody, so it would be strange to see it.

When it comes to DLC though, Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends was DLC only for the 360, so Koei might have the right idea there. But I suppose as the online networks expand for all the systems DLC will become a more regular channel to send out media.

I'll go ahead with my favorites though...

DW - Sima Yi
SW - Oda Nobunaga/Kojiro Sasaki
DW:G - Qubeley/Epyon
Fanime 2010: Sima Yi, Sergei Dragunov, and Sephiroth.

Favorite story has got be:

DW6 - Sima Yi betrays Cao Cao

Most cheap character and team:

OW2 - Himiko, the Monkey guy, and this guy that carries two swords and a spear. (sorry forget the names, too many characters to remember.)  :o

From what I gather from reading through reviews, the issue is the gameplay is very simplistic.  The trend i see is that games where you advance on to more complicated combos, pull off special attacks, and seem to require timing and skill in order to win are more successful (Ninja Gaiden, God of War, etc.).  Dynasty Warriors (and failed knock-offs such as 99 Nights) on the other hand are able to be beaten with little more than mashing the basic attack over and over.  While amusing initially, it quickly becomes repetitive and unrewarding.  While special attacks and troops moving around the battlefield exist, they can be effectively ignored in the end.

No close friends on mine or myself have ever played any of those games. And no one I know to my knowledge plays these games.

They probably were never greatly popular, though perhaps they were to a smaller extent. Though there popularity has most likely fallen from its prime, whatever it was.

Though this is all from a observer with little knowledge in the subject.

I've been playing Dynasty Warriors since Dynasty Warriors 2 on the PS2. I could understand that the game play is still the same but with more characters and more stages or the same stages just modify. I played up to Dynasty Warriors 5. I still need to play the 6th one. The only thing I hate about Dynasty Warriors 6 is that they limit down on the character selecting and some of the outfits I hate some outfits on 6. I'm still playing the Dynasty Warriors 3: Xteme Legends just maxing out the points since I already have all the 5th weapons, 40% of the weapons I had help from friends their very hard to get. I have Dynasty Warriors 1 and 2 on the PSP, I'm still playing the Vol. 2 on the PSP

The only Samurai Warriors game I've played was Samurai Warriors: State of War on the PSP I still need to play the ones on the PS2. I like it nothing different about just different story line

The only Warriors Orochi game I played was the first on the PSP, Still need to play 1 and 2 on the PS2. I like it

Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games I still need to tried it out, I heard mix stuff about it but I'll still want to play it.

I only one of my friends still plays this games besides me, I could understand that most people are loosing interest of the games cause of the same game play, same stages. Same with almost everything. To me I'll still continue playing them

Fanime or any convention that I go. I usually don't see many Dynasty Warriors cosplayers , last years fanime I didn't see any, not even any Samurai Warriors cosplayers. My girlfriend and I are gonna cosplay as a Dynasty Warriors characters for next years famine. I'm getting her in the game too since she got me into some of her games.

The Orochi series has a hidden layer of depth to its combat system. Sadly, few people realize this, and write it off as a repetitive button masher.

Here's a clip of myself playing Survival Mode while attempting to work as much style into it as possible.

The only limit to the combos and team dynamics in the Orochi games is your own imagination, really. Sadly, Dynasty Warriors 6 came after it, and ended up being the mindless, repetitive button masher with no depth to its combat, much like how the series has been (wrongly) accused of all these years.
