Does anyone know what tax is on a room? I am trying to get my budget figured out a head of time... like NOW!

I have no job, hahaha I have to save money hahahaha.
So yeah if you know hotel room tax lemme know 10%? 20% what ever... i would like to know ASAP! >.<

Estimating 20% is usually a safe ballpark.  Though, to quote from the SJ Hilton's website:

QuoteTaxes are estimated based on a 10.00 % per room per night tax, a 4.00 % per room per night secondary tax, a 2.00 USD per room per night tertiary tax, and a 0.60 USD per room per night quaternary tax. Changes in taxes or fees applied after booking may affect the total rate for your stay.
2012 Plans:

  • Risai (Juuni Kokki/Twelve Kingdoms)
  • Shusui (Saiunkoku Monogatari)
  • others TBD

2nd post. I did a budget sample from my last year's stay: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,12631.0.html

Let's see here, I still have my transaction statement from Marriott last year.
Looks like 10% 'occ' which I assume means Occupancy Tax.
0.0007% TRSM Fee
and lastly a straight $2 TBID Fee

So yeah much lower than 20%, however that is based on last year.  I know several taxes were raised last year and I'm not sure if hotel taxes and fees were among them.
I would think a good enough 'safe side' is 15%.
However don't be like alot of people and forget parking costs :P

I'm going by 10.07%. For my estimates I'm not including those taxes at least until I actually reserve a room.

And the security deposit that hotels do. Check this thread out for a lot more detail about budgeting: http://forums.fanime.com/index.php/topic,10753.0.html. Great insights and infos from other congoers.

I was able to talk my way out of the security deposit as well since I've been a good customer of Marriott in the past.

I really don't notice that "security deposit" since it doesn't show up on my statement. I do keep more than $150 free on my CC when I do travel to Fanime (although I really need more than that to cover the full charge to avoid a overcharge).

Kuromi_Kat

ok mixed answers... but at least I have a rough idea... thanks!

Hmm I read in the San Jose Merc about an extra 4% tax on hotels in San Jose now to fund the new convention center stuff, so that might be in effect this next con.

I did a sample check in at the marriott and the taxes for a $209 room is $29.66. That's ~15%.

As far as the security deposit, there's been a lot of fighting over who gets charged and who doesn't but in my experience and the experience of the majority of Fanime hotel-goers the hotels will charge you a $50 security deposit for every night you are planning to stay. This charge doesn't show up on your bank statement, but it will be charged on your card initially, making the money unavailable for use at least for the first day. There are some banks that turn around and free up that deposit money on the next business day, or even on Saturday.

So, if you are planning to stay make sure you have an additional $150 to be charged on your card. They also accept checks and cash for the deposit I believe.
