When this happen to me I asked the guy:

Would you like me to kick you in the balls?

Slightly off topic, but there was a person late Saturday night/Sunday morning who asked to be kicked there.  He was wasted, but that didn't stop people - he took about 20+ kicks, and that giant sword that Pyramid Head was carrying around to the crotch.

The drummer from UP HOLD tried to talk the guy out of it, but he was set on taking hits to 'home base'. XD  And funniest of all, it was recorded.

Damn... I need to see that video... That sounds like something that one of my friends would possibly do...
It all really depends how well the lies are told...

Quote from: "E-Chan"I know there were signs, but I saw no sign of schedules. And by that I mean a sheet (or five) of paper that said "Friday ... [list of films] Saturday ... [list of films]... etc."

We had these at all the Asian Film Rooms. Did you check the Asian Film Rooms? We always have schedules posted up, complete with summaries, running time, and pictures.
Probably I'm either just going blind or my sleep deprived brain didn't register their existance. Either way, that's the best (organizational) detail of the film rooms.

And as far as the crotch-kicking goes... wow. He wanted to?

Quote from: "EternalMalachi"Which was the skit that won for best comedy?

It was the "yaoi" Hughes x Mustang skit (from Fullmetal Alchemist).

You can see all the awards here:
http://forums.fanime.com/viewtopic.php?t=4984

Ah, well, then I definately agree with the Judges on this one.  I was helping out my friend with his rehearsal so I go to see a bunch of the skits early and that was definately one of the funniest skits.

In fact, I don't know if I liked the Maes x Roy skit more or less than the Gloomy's Clues as funniest skits of the show.  Behind them, however, are the Gainax Boy skit and the Black Mage Wrestlemania.

Wii are Ninjas was funny, but not so much as the ones listed above.

Leishu

Hehehe...

'Black Mage Wrestlemania' was also a sequel to a skit we (Team Flex) put on in 2003. ^_~

No kidding I'm sure that would be quite a pisser.  >.<   Though often I don't agree with dani's quick turn to violence though in that case id suggest a quick punch or kick to the sensitive bits would be in order.  (Id say kick to the nuts but sometimes its girls hugging girls.)
Yes, random violence is not really the way I'd want to go!  Though I probably should have said something instead of standing there in shock. >_<  This is the only year I've ever dealt with fanboy/fangirl attention, and I've been going to Fanime since 1998.

I really enjoyed Masako's perfomance during the Masquerade intermission. I just felt bad for her because she (as well as Eugene and JC) was really great, but not many people were paying attention.. which is fine because it was an intermission, but I think they deserve some kind of timeslot or situation where they can have a fully attentive audience!

This was probably the most bizarre thing that happened to me while running Fanime's Masquerade. There was NEVER intended to be an "intermission" -- none -- we were introducing the next performance, a set by Maiyu and Luno (her band) and it took a few moments to set up her equipment. Everyone on my staff was in absolute shock when everyone started standing up, talking, walking around, etc.... right in the middle of the performance. We were honestly horrified. I was running around the theater myself trying to get people to sit back down, especially the cosplayers who were wandering around with non-peace-bonded equipment which was completely prohibited and against various violations. When I went to go ask the union staff to bring the house lights down to indicate that this was not an intermission, I discovered the lighting/sound union theater staff had disappeared on a break-- they figured since everyone else was getting up that it was a scheduled break (even though it was not in our script or our program).

I remember Brian saying something about 'and now we'll take a bit of a break to listen to some music by Mayuu'--I don't remember exactly how he said it, but I'm pretty sure I remember him using the word "break" in her introdution.  I'm sure he meant it as a break from the cosplay skits, but I think it was ambiguous enough that the audience took it to mean a literal break.  I do agree that it really does disrupt the flow of the show to have a break in the middle, with all the noise and chaos it creates.

One thing I think would help in the future is making a note in the program guide about what the food  policy is for Masquerade--going from 6-11pm goes right through dinnertime for most people, and I know by the end I was *soooo* glad I'd smuggled a bag of saki ika in with me and a bottle of water.  I would have been *much* happier to have brought something a bit more substantial to eat if it were openly allowed, so that the performers didn't keep getting drowned out by the rumbling in my stomach.  ^_^;

Thank goodness for Pita Pit afterwards--good, cheap food, open to 3am, and the cooks are into anime as well, discussing their favorite shows with the cosplayers who came in after the Masquerade.  I wish I'd know about it in previous years!

On the whole, excellent job with the Masquerade this year!  :)

Tech 13

The Pita Pit opened around September of last year, so this was the first year it was open for Fanime.  :D

Even before I stepped out to the stage to stall and announce Maiyo and Luno, the stage crew was setting up the equipment, people were leaving their seats and the house lights went up. I was a bit puzzled and uttered "break" because of this happening.  Marissa as well didn't expect the house light to go up and she reported backstage that the tech crew disappeared during this time as well.

Part of the difficulty with the Auditorium is the layers of staffing we have to endure just to get light/sound cues.  There always seems to be a delay of a good five seconds or so before light go down/up and sound cues get done.  This has been THE biggest gripe of mine for the past three years in San Jose.  The venue (Union house rules) prevents us from doing our own tech. :(

GOOD
-Great costumes this year, especially the Winged elf and the Sephiroths.
-Friendly lower level staff
-No princess 69
-Hilarious AMVs, especially montage
-Abundance of pocky
-Dokkoida and Age of Chaos, nuff said

BAD

-Moronic upper management, as usual.
-Failure of some panels to show up
-My singing when one panel failed to arrive
-Eberron in the Gaming room
-No place to sleep
-Air conditioning always on
-New host character for mAsquerade not as funny as Deiter.  No funny voices = no funny.
-Peace bonding. I still hold taht it is a socialist practice.
-food...
-As usual, held on the same weekend as Baycon and Kublacon.
-No enough anime music playing on loudspeaker
-TOO MUCH RAP MUSIC!

Suggestions:

-Add a communal sleeping area with 50 or so cots for roomless fanime atendees to sleep in. Always keep it darka nd turn the heater on.  Also, some sleepy music would be nice, like the Crystal Theme or Real Folk Blues.

-More free form karaoke.

-Improv comedy.

-AMV Hell 3, nuff said

-Bring back Deiter or at least SOMEBODY with a funny accent.  California accent NOT funny.  English accent funny.  Australian accent funny. But NOT a "normal" accent.

-Hold it on a non kublacon weekend

-We're anime fans not hip hop loving, mysogynistic anarchist rapper types with no regard for culture whatsoever.  Hiphop and rap do NOT mix with anime, please get rid of all rap, hiphop and death metal.  Sorry if it sounds like a generalization, but most rap and hiphop is VERY mysogynistic, irreverant and violent.

I will tell you right now that chances are they can't set up a room with cots. That would be total madness. Besides, I'm sure the convention center has something against people sleeping there overnight. I mean, as part of an event. If you don't get a room, then you commute, or sleep in your car. If they do that chances are people will be like "Well I don't need to reserve a room" and then try to get the cots. Of course, they will be full and then there will be a whole bunch of confusion, etc.

And your rap/hiphop comment doesn't 'sound' like a generalization, it is a stereotype. Do I love it? No, but I don't think that's fair to the others who like that style of music.

Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. THat's a bit extreme....

Moronic Management? Do you have any idea how hard they work to get it done? I highly reccomend that you attend a staff meeting to see how hard these folks work just to make sure that you, as ungrateful as you are, have a good con. There were several members of that 'Moronic upper management' who sacrificed their entire cons just so they could make an attempt at giving about ten-thousand folks a good con so maybe you should think before you throw such a weighty insult around. It's moronic.

On Kublacon: Fanime's been around for much, much longer. The cons even moved to Memorial Day on the same year, so there's really no reason or case for that. Baycon was talked about at the Fanime when the move was made. It comes down to making a choice.

On places to sleep: Did you notice those two enormous buildings right next to the convention center? Those are called 'Hotels' and you can 'rent' 'rooms.' at them. They also have beds and, get this, showers (since I assume with your forgoing of sleep that you forwent washing yourself in anything but a bathroom sink)

On music: There was Anime music playing 24 hours a day in the convention center. It was just very quiet.

Then explain the delays every year.  There are Union people running the board directly on stage right and I am certain there was a union person at table in the back.  Needless to say there were huge gaps in cues.  Have things changed?  Is it simply the vast size of the venue itself?  Headset coms were in short supply again this year.  Casey mentioned that to me. I am interested to know.

very amusing rant....not very keen on details.  Since I AM DIETER.. Doh!
I did do "some funny voices" as you call it.  Perhaps you were out getting food.

Odd comment about no sleeping places....not the responsibility of the con to provide a bed and breakfast.

Interesting use of grammar  too (no funny voices = no funny) is that new math??

Hard to please everyone, I guess.

I'll totally vouch for this. There was as serious miscommunication with the union staff (who did not read the scripts we gave them -- I found the $5.00/each to print scripts completly unopened backstage after the Masq) and they just brought the house lights up and took off, even before Brian went out there to announce Maiyu-san and Luno. There was one person who stayed to run the mics, we had no lighting staff at all. We are going to ensure that something like this doesn't happen next year.

/marisa minor rant mode on
Also, I would like to note that I am NOT anti-Union, so I hope people don't think I am slamming on unions. These -particular- workers were completely inflexible, and just happened to be union staff and used the union guidelines to reinforce their inflexibility. It really cheesed me off :P  We have happily worked with union staff at AX, PMX, and Anime Boston with no problems -- so this was a new one for us. Usually the union people do their job and do extra even -- in this case we practically had to give blood to get them to do anything. We will be brainstorming ways to fix this for next year.
