I Make Eurobeat. :3

For those of you that don't know this about me, I write music. For those of you that DO know that about me, well... uh... I can write music... FOR you.

Need a theme going on in the background of your student film? Making a game and want something to flow in the midst of a fight or something? Do you like Eurobeat? Paper or Plastic? Why are carrots orange? Where's Waldo? Who can believe it's not butter? (I can. It's Margarine, people. Freakin' Margarine.)

If the answers to any of the first three questions are "yes", then you're in luck! I can create musical themes for any length of time needed (within reason... I won't compose rock operas for you, I do have to take care of other things in my life, y'know!), in just about any genre. Although a majority of what I write is Eurobeat or Eurobeat-flavored, I also write in

• Jazz
• Orchestral/Classical
• Alt-Rock
• Metal/Power Metal
• Christmas-flavored
• Abstract
• Any style you need in particular, granted I can understand it.

"Graveyard" is interesting.

Two suggestions, though:
1. You need better samples. Seriously. Waaaaaay too MIDI-sounding at the moment. I know we can't all be "OMGGIGSAMPLEZ" but... there are some sites with free soundfonts out there, and you should invest some time in getting a couple. Also, try Synth1 as a nice, free, easy, somewhat powerful software synthesizer for the electronic parts of your music. That is, of course, if the tools you're using support VSTi. (If you ever buy a composing software, make sure it supports VSTi. Unless it's Reason, which has enough high-quality preset samples and synths to make up for it.)

2. You can improve the intro by taking the important notes off the main, quantized beats. I see this a lot in amateur composers: they want to put a note on all four beats, or on consistently the same beats every measure. I had the same problem when I was composing. But when you listen to professional artists, they vary it up a lot more. The dramatic delays are important - sometimes you're expecting an instrument to play a note and it waits an extra half-beat to come in, or it plays two notes where you expected one. More importantly, the rhythms of the lead instruments don't repeat verbatim after only one or two measures. Sometimes electronic music is an exception, but the artists make up for it by putting either really dramatic variation in the drums, or constantly dropping and adding layers, or putting interesting filters on the lead instruments.

But you should definitely keep writing music.

Heheh. Yeah, I could probably stand to do that. I actually wrote Graveyard last year, and recorded it "as-is" at the time. I didn't even put in cymbal crashes ._.

Just put up a remix of an old Christmas remix I wrote last year... Frosty The Raver 2007. I took the old "distorted guitar" track, and recorded it in through a distortion pedal. As for the SOLO in which it begins, I've decided to make the first little bit a tad more... human. :3

Now, that's not a new song by any means-- this, too, is a re-recording of an older song I wrote last year. There WILL be new material soon, but given my lack of time to really do much new material (I cut things close by posting here to begin with...), I've gone the cheap way and just remixed old tunes. ^^;

New song: Lovers on a Snowy Night

Vocals are a bit shoddy, but I've not been in the best of shape, and chances are good I'd never be satisfied with my vocals anyway. Thus I just tossed this whole suck'a together in one day, tightened up a few notches and slapped 'er onto Myspace.

It's not all Hi-NRG Attack-esque like the rest of my previous work, but don't worry! Those'll be back soon. :3

Your instruments still sound FREAKIN' MIDI. Come on, man, do better. Especially the bass and the drums - they're painful after a while. I'll give you a tip I got from a much better composer - you should have several different samples for each drum type, and switch between them (often using more than one at a time) to give your drums a more dynamic feel. Because, when a live artist plays the drums, they never make the exact same sound repeatedly.

Compositionally, you've improved, for sure. The first minute is a little rough - you should vary up the velocity of the notes so that they don't sound so mechanical. In addition to getting much better samples and the ability to put effects on them. High production values and sample texture are very important to electronic music. What software do you use? Depending on how much money you are willing/able to spend, you should consider buying (or, you know, "acquiring") FruityLoopsFL Studio ($99 - don't get the "Express" edition, because you NEED piano roll), Reason ($499), or Cubase ($799).

Mm. I do have a few VST's lined up; Once I know how to get them to run instead of my usual MIDI tracks I could power out some better sounds. I do recognize that those sounds do limit me, and I'm doing the best I can to work around/with what I have and can afford.

I at LEAST have new Synth and Bass sounds for sure; drums may come soon.

Outside of my "limited" setup, I basically have 3 rack synthesizers being controlled from Cakewalk, recorded into Audacity. The synths are:

*Korg 05R/W: General MIDI sounds, mostly what I use for bass and synth.
*E-MU Audacity 2000: Trance/Techno sounds. Arpeggiators and drums.
*E-MU Proteus 3 (in a proteus 2 body): Earthy/Ethnic sounds.
Those all go through a Eurorack mixer, with an output into my laptop.

Now that I have VST's though, I should get a LOT more variety and quality. And I mean, a LOT.
