Wow. That's... just heartsinking.

Mervyn's? Circuit City? CompUSA? I don't shop at these places very often, but the fact that they'll be gone is just... weird. Time to stock up on stockings.

Faaaaaaaawk, those stores are going down too, huh... Sucks. I used to hella play around with stuff in Sharper Image. Most of the KB's around here have been long gone, but you know, it's cool to see a few still around, but I guess.... not anymore. Disney stores? ALL OF the Discovery Channel stores? What is the world coming to?

I'm getting old.

Wow... One of the Ann Taylors that went down was in Sac's Arden Mall... It's now replaced by Armani Exchange...
A lot of stores also reduced its store sizes... I believe there was an entire mall somewhere around the area that went down...
I hope Arden stays up, but I doubt that'll go down anytime soon...

and to think, not only are we losing those stores/products, thousands of people are getting laid off. X_x it's times like these i feel a bit of relief i'm in the service.

but foot locker, seriously though, was a bit of a shocker. i mean to think that nearly all of them if NOT all of them are closing down;  you'd think that they'd at least keep a few stores open in bay, especially with all the sneaker fiends in that area, aha.

How depressing... Stupid economy. -_-;

I heard all the Linens and Things stores already closed this summer(I could just be thinking of the California stores, but meh).

The Circuit City closing saddens me though. Better customer service than Frys, yet cheaper than Best Buy >>. I personally don't see the point in having a Sharper Image store since hardly anyone buys from that store. It's only good for window shopping at best.

I find it HECKA FUNNY that there were some new Steve and Barry's stores that just opened up in San Jose/Milipitas recently and now they're closing it up.

And yeah, Pacific Sunwear = PacSun.

Yeap. That's a mighty fine economy alright.

All we have out here is Walmart and a dollartree.
I was real sad when Mervyns said they were closing...I'd drive an hour to them, just to shop there.

Well.. CompUSA was already hurting before. They did close all the stores in our area a few years back.

All of this just plain sucks. It is always sad.

Mervyn's is the one I'm going to miss. A lot of the rest of these (CompUSA, Sharper Image, Linens 'n Things) are good riddance, and the rest don't seem to be hurting that bad. (What, Macy's is closing 9 stores? That still leaves them tons.)

Still doesn't bode well for the economy, though.

I think it was bound to happen.. like there is too many of those stores like there are Starbucks. It isn't really special or exciting to go because they are all the same. I am actually surprise we have stores since a lot of people order stuff online, but then I forget that people need instant grat too :(.

That, and it's a lot easier and cheaper to return something if need be.

Agreed, wal-mart puts alot of small buisnesses out of buisness, I live in a small ass town that has a wall-mart Im not suprised though since they want to make it a super center. I mean come on we have grocery stores and such =\ besides I read that women dont get any rights in that store when it comes to pay and promotions.
I like the small organic foods store, tea house, tiny pharmacys and my local supermarket kthx

And that's not getting into how they treat employees.  Wasn't it a few years ago that they lost in court when a bunch of employees sued them over forced unpaid overtime and other oh-so-wonderful practices?  Yeah, real class act there.  >:(
Title: Re: projected store closures [2009]
Post by: Jun-Watarase on November 27, 2008, 12:35:02 PM
Walmart is an terribly organized cooperation, and above statements aren't far from the truth. They hire employees that don't know better/don't have much of a choice and force them to work overtime at illegal wages, sometimes getting paid with nothing at all and convincing immigrants that choose to work there that it's "normal". Employees aren't allowed to interact with each other, either-- unions are forbidden. They also purposely make their health-insurance unreasonably expensive, when already underpaying their employees, forcing them to go straight onto welfare.

And yes, they do destroy communities and small businesses-- they slap their locations around areas where smaller businesses cannot compare to their prices, forcing communities to shut down and go out of business. Walmart also closes down their stores without warning, leaving abandoned Walmart buildings that no one can rent out or use due to their sheer impractical size.

Not to mention, people often suffer from wearing shoes and clothing when harmful chemicals within them-- like the infamous pair of flower-print flip flops people report getting chemical burns from. Guess what? Went to Walmart a few months ago, and they're still in stock.

It was for employees working thru unpaid lunch breaks, and no keeping time clock records of the lunch breaks.

Mervyn's was notorious many years ago for having "Sales associates" work off the clock.

It'd be a blow for sure, but in the long run it might be better for us if there were no WalMart once we got past that initial blow.  The market might be more accommodating for smaller, local businesses once the economy picks back up, it might be better for manufacturers since WalMart wouldn't be around to strongarm prices that wind up being too low, and it'd certainly be better for retail workers in general since it wouldn't be around to spread some very bad influences in the industry in regards to labor relations.  Would it be perfect?  No, but it could be better.  Would there be a risk of someone else taking WalMart's place that would be just as bad, if not worse?  Probably, but there's also the chance that things could be better as well (Maybe Costco could take over, and they're known for better treatment of workers in general).

The transition stage would be rough, especially for communities where Wal-Mart is the only major store nearby. Probably, you'd get some other corporation such as Target try and take its place. And strictly speaking in numbers, Wal-Mart shutting its doors would have to be bad for the economy, but that doesn't take into account long-term benefits that aren't measurable, like the benefits of people working and shopping at stores with more ethical, friendly business practices.
