MSPA Gathering

Hi, I'm Steve, Astrayred0 here, Krimson to some, mechanistInquisitor to others.
A lot of people nowadays seem to know about Ms Paint Adventures whether I'm talking with friends, on image boards, or whatever. And there are those who are interested in cosplaying characters from their various series', like Homestuck or Problem Sleuth.
So I thought, hey, why isn't their an official gathering?
And then, I had a thought.
"Steve: Make a MSPA 2011 gathering thread"

And whoop, here we are.

If you don't know what MS Paint Adventures is, here's the site:

It's basically an "interactive" story about whatever the creator, Andrew Hussie, feels like telling.

His main story right now is Homestuck, which is about kids who enter a video game world, and their fun. Kids and Fun. ;)

It's gotten pretty far now, and I suggest you give it a read, if you have the time.

Anyway, I really think there should be an official gathering for this.

Here is the coscom thread created by Hanyaan, some info may be listed here if not here...here.

Fanime will be taking group pictures during the Gathering/Event this year. If you do not want to be included in those pictures please step aside for those photos. By remaining with the group when the pictures are being taken you give your consent to be photographed.

We will need to agree on a few things first:

Day: Saturday  
Time: 4 PM, or 4:13 ;)
Location: MP: 1FCC LA ~ L: FiF HS
Meeting Place: 1st Floor Convention Center (Inside)

Around 1 PM? Maybe? It's because some others want to try to get the "4:13" or 4 PM even, just for fun. As soon as we can agree on a spot to have the gathering, I'll see what would work better.

A cool place would be in the front side of the hotel. Where all the tree's, cool stairs and such are.
If not there is a cool looking park right across the street.

I was thinking the fountains, and near the steps outside near hilton.

Well, the only way I can think of is getting Scelera(?) type contacts, but not the full yellow ones.

I know a 2D cosplayer who has contacts that are like that, but black. I could ask her. but they have no pupils. D:

Aah, well, it's as good of a start as any! If you could ask her, that'd be real swell. ♥ I'll need to get red contacts for myself, too, which is gonna be tricky because I actually have NO pupil in my right eye, so I'll have to find red contacts with pupils in them, somehow...

These lenses (http://www.coastalcontacts.com/special-effects-lenses/yellow-sclera/prod97138.html) would probably work great, and these ones (http://www.coastalcontacts.com/special-effects-lenses/scarecrow/prod97223.html) could probably work as well, save for the black right around the edge. The only problem about them is their pricing, but the quality you get from them is //definitely// worth it, in my opinion.

Try this site (http://www.9mmsfx.com/lenses.html) for your red contacts. They're pricey, but they make custom contact lens to order, and could definitely design a contact with a pupil in it. I'd say it's worth a shot if you have the money as well, haha.

Also, update on the humans/trolls I'll be bringing along with me!

here's a nice tutorial for doing facepaint. It's mainly for GaMzEe, but it is an awesome tut for trolls in general.

There's also a tutorial somewhere for turning pantyhose into grey arms and hands, for those that don't want to paint their, well, arms and hands.

If anyone can lurk the MSPA forums for that tutorial, we'd all be thankful.

Also, for other MSPA con groups I've run into, I sometimes see that they draw up a spiffy map of where everything's gonna happen... Since the Fanime location abbreviations kinda hurt my brain, is there any way there'll be a map?

however, I'm having difficulty finding theatrical makeup (in this case, Ben Nye). If had known i would be doing this, I would have bought a bunch of it when the Spirit halloween store was open, cause thats the only place i've seen it. Any ideas on where to find it? (because from what I hear, eyeshadow isn't the best option >_>)

I'm personally using the Ben Nye, I got it at a local costume shop that thankfully sells it. I've also heard that Mehron is really good quality theatrical makeup, so if you can get your hands on that it would probably work too. The biggest problem is unless you can get it at local stores, it's kind of a pain to get your hands on. Buying it online usually costs a ton for shipping and most theatrical supply sites require a minimum purchase higher than what the makeup itself costs. I'd say search around for any costuming stores in your area, although places like Party City are not going to have high quality stuff.(Staaaaay away from el cheapo grease paint! That stuff is evil) Try independent or smaller costume shops because they might have a better selection of higher quality products.

I might buy some extra grey makeup and sell it to people at the con if they need emergency/last minute supplies.

School's out for me so it's time to get cracking! I've got work over the weekend but all I've got left to do is make my Gamzee's horns. Soooooo excited! Also, it's been decided that I'm going to be Tavros for the gathering but I'll probably change into Aradia later in the day.

Waiting for John-shirt to arrive. Biting me nails. Preparing backup-plans to make my own gorram shirt if need be. Bluh.

Also: I'm bringing a pack of playing cards. My specific plans for the pack of playing cards shall remain undisclosed for now, but I did have another idea: If people want to do shippy pictures, then the pairs/trio can hold up aces representing the suit in question--for example, Karkat trying to strangle Karkat while holding up the ace of spades, or Equius and Nepeta hanging out like bros while holding up the ace of diamonds.

...I might have put too much thought into this. Maybe a little. >.>

dakjndjksnadkj I want to go so bad and meet you guys but I will probably be super nervous. ;u; Because if I do go im probably going to be the youngest one there aha.

Not completely positive if im going, but if I do go I am going as Karkat. Possibly running around with a pink ribbon in my hair like a derp.

Also if I go it will be with a friend or two who are not going to cosplay Homestuck, even if they cosplay.

I make the trip all the way to Michaels and forget to buy what I originally went there for; grey fabric paint. fml.
Karkat is still not styled. It's still in its corner, looking like a giant tribble. Com on motivation, don't fail me now.

Ill definitely end up going as some version of Jack, probably the harlequin one. I really am excited for Fanime in general, first time to Fanime as well. Hope to have tons o at the con and fun with you guys. I might even bring some delicious treats, depending on what I can get my hands on (I was thinking of bringing a ton of Black Licorice Scottie dogs, then I remembered how bad black licorice tastes)


Just gotta try and finish this comical hat in time and ill be 100% complete.

Apparently, the What Pumpkin store was having shipping issues. We'll see; if it's not here by Wednesday, I'll go ahead and make my own. Glad to see someone else likes the card idea.

Melancholy: I'd be surprised if you were the youngest at the gathering; Fanime tends to have a fairly large number of teenagers. From my understanding, this is a friendly fandom as well, so I don't think there's much reason to be nervous.

Anyway, I hope you guys are putting the finishing touches on your cosplays. I know I am (These damn Eridan pant stripes)

I am liking that idea with the shipping quadrant playing cards pictures, we should try that out  :D

So yeah, planning to have games and a picnic in the park if you haven't heard, don't think i posted that in the main MSPA forums but i mentioned a little on mspachan.

I'll be the Eridan wwith a Gamzee on saturday, near the CG booth in the morning, if I am working the morning shift, who knows.
And the other days I'll John it up. (with a botched haircut noneless)

Because I don't have the money to buy a wig or wait for it to ship, and because I have wanted black hair and a short style anyway, I got my hair cut short and dyed it black yesterday c:

I've only seen a few other Tavros' out there, but I really really want to cosplay as him because he's my favorite troll. I'll probably be easy to spot, what with my wheelchair and giant horns that make it difficult to go through doors and all 8D And... as much as I'm all for accuracy and whatnot, I have never seen a bald cap look good and I refuse to shave my head(oh goodness I'm not butch enough for that) so I'll be rocking a faux hawk.

Hey, I'm going to be the Mindfang that @SunshineDuk recruited. I am ridicu-cited to do this. I was wondering, though, if any Vriska who's going to come would be willing to share their lipstick, as I cannot find any blue lipstick, although I found blue eyeliner and mascara. I am very willing to share mine if you can't find any.

Oooh man I couldn't find any blue lipstick either, but I'm just using blue eye liner and some lip gloss :O

I love how I dragged my mom to the mall to find a long sleeved black shirt, only for there to be none, so we go to the Target near our house and it turns out they had a bunch there. : D

I suggest looking for a "The cotton Store" or an H&M, they have nice cheap long black sleeves. That's where i got my nice black long sleeve for Eridan. If you live near east bay, make your way to the Great Mall, tons of stores to find stuff.

Speaking of things, I need to go try that pantyhose method for troll arms. Has anyone else tried the method out yet?

Oh boy you guys, Fanime is in like 3 days! I can barely contain my excitement.

Been wondering if any people who have worn a Zentai suit in the past for like a Exile/Guardian cosplay had any uncomfortable experiences, so I can prepare for any sort of mishaps that may happen. Since will be my first time being in one for an extended period of time. Do they usually get really hot?

Other than that, my Harlequin Jack is 98% complete! Just gotta finish attaching the various pieces to the suit.

I hope I look half as good as alot of the photos ive seen from previous MSPA gatherings.

Acquired PIRATE HAT and TIGHTS and DRESS-LIKE OBJECT today.

Need to get sleeves for my gloves, paint my horns, add the collar and the pauldrons to the dress, and possibly acquire pluritudes of 8-sided dice.

Lol I think if you're a chick, the "not shaved sides of the head" is totally excusable, but gawd you look so adorable in that shot! And slightly worried, but I guess that's fine if you're doing Tavros lol.

Chazo: I can't offer any real insight, as I can't get in contact with my friend that has worn a zentai suit.
Since the one you got is probably black [ just assuming ], you'll probably get a little hot just because black absorbs heat, so stay hydrated.


In other news, I finally found a plastic sickle at my local costume shop.
I should probably feel bad for not having made the damn thing, but I couldn't argue with two bucks.
Still need to style the wig and put the sign on my shirt somehow.

@Verifyy OH GOG YES FINALLY A SOLLUX, FFFF.

Also, @ all of the Vriska Cosplayers in need of blue lipstick, i've found an easy fix; Make your own. It's easy!

Take some Blue eyeshadow and mix it vaseline. Looks just like coloured lip gloss!

'Ello, everyone; the gathering was a lot of fun, though it was a lot more huge than I expected. I'd like to give a huge shoutout to the Eridan who got everything organized. He stepped up to a big task and did it well, despite various crises; I feel kinda bad that he wiped down so much of the chalk-covered wall on his own. He deserves major props for everything he did; if anyone knows him personally, give him a fistbump for me.

I've put my photos on DeviantArt, and I know they're getting cycled through Tumblr. I look forward to talking to everyone!

Just doing my job as Gatherer
I was so relieved that it went smoothly with the orders of pictures, I didn't really had to do much work, but when getting people ready for the official picture, I'm thankful to those who helped move people around, like the Doc Scratch, I can't thank you enough man.

Don't worry bout the chalk wall, they thought it was gonna rain, I thought it was gonna rain, and wanted to move people in. I'm just doing my job as a gatherer and staffer by cleaning it up, no harm done!

Hope HS and MSPA is still popular by next year so we can do this again! Maybe we'll get a better spot next time! Did you know our size rivaled the Final Fantasy gathering? Now you know!

Still sore about someone taking a Rose's bag, kinda ruined the gathering for me...

But, everyone was so positive during the gathering, I can't thank you all enough.

It was one of the Jade who got her bag nicked, but that turned out okay; the only things of value she lost were her phone and her badge, she has a backup phone lying around somewhere, and there were plenty of people to hang out with outside of the badge-requiring rooms. Losing her bag sucked, but she seems to have enjoyed the con regardless.

Yeah, Doc Scratch helped a lot with rallying everyone. I'm sure there'll be another huge showing next year; the story ain't going to be over by then, and as the fandom matures, we might get more diversity in costumes, too.

You still deserve mad props for managing all that insanity, and 4Aces!Dave (my roommate) agrees with me; he wanted me to give you a thumbs-up for him.
