Just think of that $700 plane ticket as an investment.  :P  It's like, 25cents for a day's meal in China, so you're saving what..like, $8+ a day?  Stay there half a year and you've got that plane ticket paid off.

But yeah, that place is kinda pricey.  Oh well, hey, if you had a good time and could afford it, who cares?  Some people buy $200 jeans, some people buy $400 rims, some people buy $1400 lenses, so a $100 classy meal isn't the worst way to spoil yourself.

Long

Well, if you're a girl, just hit on some guy and force him to take you there and pay for you.

If you're a guy, well hit up your parents beforehand. xP

If I go there, I'd be treating the guy I'm travelling with ;P I owe him a nice dinner.

I figure this trip is my one luxury I owe myself. I worked a hideous job I -hated- for a year, where I got repeatedly insulted and abused by my boss. The only way I can justify having put up with his crap for so long is to turn around and take the money I earned and do something that makes me really happy. So that's what this entire trip is, including the possibility of slightly overpriced food. Hehe.

And wow, sorry for having gone so off-topic. ~.~;; But yay for tasty food!

Not that much off topic. I mean fanime itself is us escaping from our mundane lives, so why not the food? That's the reason I began the thread. Nothing quite like sitting down to a nice and delicious dinner. Fanime is the one con where I get picky, dining goes with that too.

Hehe. Well after 4hrs...there's a good chance I might be hungry again..or at least starting to >.>;

You make for an EXCELLENT point there glitch, but I'm trying to balance swag with tasty food...so it can be a hard choice to make when I don't even know exactly how much money I'll have >.<

Best FanimeCon food advice:
-if you're staying at a hotel room, bring snacks and drinks when you get an urge to munch something
-go out to eat with a group
-make sure you have money for food, don't spend everything at the dealers room or gaming room
-plan out your eating times, you might miss a panel or show (food not allowed in some rooms?)
-stay hydrated with water (sounds like exercise advice, but you will use up energy at the con, there are people who faint from exhaustion)
-explore downtown San Jose, there are more restaurants than whats said already (doesn't have to be fancy or sit-down)

Here's a good link for all eating places:

this should posted somewhere on the fanime program. I tell some of my buddies a good chunk of the above before fanime.

Here's another good tip:
-buy all your food and drinks beforehand at a grocery store or something like it. you'll save more than buying all your food and drinks (especially drinks) at the con, where they'll jack up the price and expect you to pay...

btw, anyone know any good seafood places nearby?

otakuya

If you're talking about seafood restaurants, there's Scott's Seafood on Park Ave. and Hawg's Seafood Bar on Paseo de San Antonio. Those are sitdown fancy places (I like Scott's).

The Il Fornaio inside the Sainte Claire has pretty good seafood (although it's technically Italian food). It's across the street from the con, so that's also nice.

in my first venture through downtown san jose i was lost looking for a place called la victoria's (mexican food) sadly i live in san jose just never went downtown until college.  i stumbled into the hilton and asked the concierge people for directions.

they have a printout of downtown sj with all the restaurants on it shown represented as dots, pretty useful for those coming from out of town.

most of the cheap food is walking distance, stuff along santa clara, san pedro, san carlos is pretty money.

also if you have time you should research some of the downtown SJ places jatbar.com have reviewed.  they provide pics, opinions, ratings, copies of menus and the like.
zomg play! is coming to fanime 2007!

I've found Yelp.com incredibly useful for finding places to eat around a given location. Like, I've discovered new places near my own house I didn't know about.

For good quality Japanese food you're better off heading over to Japantown (VTA light rail goes right there), to Kazoo, Minato, or Okiyama (all are IMO good, in different ways). There's a place near the convention center called Smile Sushi which is actually pretty decent, but not exceptional. When me and my friends want really good Japanese food we go to Kobe, but that's on the other side of town entirely.

For relatively inexpensive food more people need to check out Hydration's bentos.

Does anyone know where I could get some good Korean food that's not too long a walk/drive?
www.go-gaia.com is my second home. :D

There was a Korean place downtown, but I'm not sure if it's still around. The only one I know for sure is still operating is Omogari, which is in Japantown (you can get there easily via light rail) where Katana-ya Ramen used to be, but I've never eaten there.

You can go to all those nice place but if you want your money for anime stuff then the simplist thing to do is to either go to Johnny Rockets or Jack in the Box. XD

Well the point of the thread is to go to a nice place and enjoy the dining experience. Jack in the box is more about sustaining yourself.

Dunno if there's going to be one in the program guide or anything, but for the time being you can use a site like Yelp!

I just did a search for "restaurants" in San Jose, then zoomed in around the convention center and it gave me this. Might be a good jumping-off point?
