I always felt like the series kind of should have ended at episode 26 (and the manga at the corresponding point) because the heart of the story was really the rivalry between Light and L and their opinions of justice and everything. But the way the story worked out, Light won against L, but that sort of ending sends the wrong moral messages, so they had to keep going until Light lost. And that dragged on and wasn't all that interesting.

I really agreed with Light and supported him at first, but as time went by he became less and less just. Starting with the killing of the FBI agents, he started killing people for infringing on his judgment rather than for actually committing serious crimes. It was clearly meant to be that way and they just had to drag it out to the ending. Which, by the way, I think the walking away scene should have been shortened for sure, but it's still not bad. I didn't appreciate the way Light went completely insane at the end there, though. I hoped he would turn himself in with dignity, but I guess that was too much.

As for seeing L as he died, I took that to mean that he realized L may actually have been a real friend, and yet he also understood that it wasn't Near that had stopped him, but really that Near and Mello had merely finished what L started.

I had always from the start wanted Light to win, and I was disgusted that he died without any dignity at all. Ideally I wish Light had won, or if it had ended with L's death.

Alternatively I believe there was a possible third ending that Light failed to realize. I would have been interested in seeing what would have happened if Light had went to jail and revealed as Kira. Many people were truly loyal to Kira, and after so many years may have stuck by him. I think interesting things could have happened....
