Do you know how much chainmail weighs? The real stuff?! I don't think I can afford the luggage weight excess!

And you don't mean the right side of the road - you mean the wrong side of the road ;) I'll be fine. I can't wait to try my hand at driving in the states. As long as I don't get an automatic and as long as the car is a HUGE thing. Can't go to the USA and drive a pokey Japanese city car now, can I ? XD
LOL, sure, if you want to spend your entire travel budget on gasoline.  It's up to about $3.50/gallon now.

Isn't gas in England like $7.00/gallon?

Quinnykins

I don't know about gas ( ;) ) but Petrol is about 98 pence a litre and diesel £1.00 a litre ish.

So let me work this out. My puney ass European car is full at £45. So about £1 a litre = 45 litres. Soooo. 45/4.54 = 9.912 (UK) gallons. Have I got the maths right?

It cost me £45 for 9.9 gallons... That's £4.54 a gallon which equals $9.40 at the current rate.

You guys have it easy - shuddup. :P At the end of the day it isn't about how much the fuel costs but how much fuel the car uses. Either way, I can't go to America and NOT drive an atmosphere-destroying SUV, can I?
Yes, if you rub it on the back of a duck it goes quite fast.

Kyokun

Good lordy.  $9/gal??  That's INSANE.  I hope you guys have excellent public transportation.  I do remember an extreme fondness for the Tube when I was in London for a month for school.  I rode that thing everywhere.  Los Angeles needs one of those badly.

Well, I suppose gas would be tremendously cheap then for you, so if you really want to enjoy an SUV experience (I myself hate the things), and aren't driving excessively, go for it.   ;D

Oh rough. However, being in CA does not mean you must drive an SUV, which are not always the easiest to drive. We are also quite fond of our hybrids!

screw that, the world's gonna blow up in 5 years anyway; get a Hummer to drive around in.

I'm currently reading the Harry Potter series so whenever anyone mentions the UK I get images of people riding on broomsticks and playing a game of Quidditch.

But getting back to the Muggle world, if visiting America will be your only chance to drive a BIG FAT ugly American SUV...then I say go for it!  :)

BrightHeart76

Seriously, if you feel the need to burn fuel why drive a big 'ol SUV?  I never understood the popularity of the vehicles anyway.  If you want to waste fuel go ahead and drive something sporty and fast...if you're going to burn some fuel might as well break some speed limits too.   ;D
Sometimes I'm glad I became a teacher.  Other times I wish I had simply become a ninja.

My cosplaying is restricted to what I can bring over on an international flight! One cosplay I've done involved a full dress of Chainmail. And I don't think I can take that on a flight XD

Check it in with your luggage.  :)

Will you be okay with driving on the right side of the road?

LOL, you're right I have no idea how much chainmail weighs.

Good luck finding a manual drive rental. I think the consensus with rental companies is that American's can't handle driving manual/"maintenance would be too much" so they offer only automatic transmission cars.
