NEW HAVEN, Connecticut (AP) -- Contraband candy has led to trouble for an eighth-grade honors student in Connecticut.

Michael Sheridan was stripped of his title as class vice president, barred from attending an honors student dinner and suspended for a day after buying a bag of Skittles from a classmate.

School spokeswoman Catherine Sullivan-DeCarlo said the New Haven school system banned candy sales in 2003 as part of a districtwide school wellness policy.

Michael's suspension was reduced from three days to one, but he has not been reinstated as class vice president.

Superintendent Reginald Mayo said Wednesday the principal was just trying to keep students safe, but he would review the decision to suspend Michael.

Michael says he didn't realize his candy purchase was against the rules, but he did notice the student selling the Skittles February 26 was being secretive.

I`m sorry but what bussiness is it of the school if someone wants to buy and eat candy on campus. How assanine. There wellness policy is a joke since people can eat a crap load of junk outside of school anyway so they should be worried about more important stuff like peer abuse or harrassment.

That is simply ridiculous.  I'm sure it'll be overturned, but until then it sucks to be that kid.

Aren't there better things to do than to ban junkfood?! Like uhm...GUNS on CAMPUS?

Really...? We all know how Skittles can fuck up your life and we don't want this kid to end up in rahab over it, right?

Coincidentally, while at Six Flags Magic Mountain yesterday, we spotted a $6 bag of Skittles in a vending machine. Granted, it was two or three times the size of a normal bag of Skittles, but still. Anyone who buys that deserves to be suspended.

You are got to be kidding? suspended for buying skittles?

Haha I laugh at this, but in some seriousness.  Some school have ban's on selling anything at school.  The band on the selling of candy, skittles being one of them, could most possibly in response to fat kids.  Thus banning sweets selling so kids dont have them in school.  But still so hillarious.  Kinda like I laugh when I heard some schools banned dodge ball because it made some kids feel inferior.  So funny.

I highly doubt they banned it because of ... obesity. They would've changed the entire school menu if that were the case. It's probably because they abused being able to have candy, since these sort of things, candy, chips, snacks in general, are normally banned because of it being a distraction in class. (ie, eating during class)

Haven't been here much since '09. I said some stupid, stupid things before (and after) that.

Some school districts choose to have rules agains the sale of candy and soda.  There's a lot of hoopla about it at my district.  What it basically comes down to is that there is a lot of Grant money available to schools from different groups if they can show that they are working to help students stick to the Dietary Guidelines and to be proactive against childhood illnesses, including obesity.  Here's the kicker (for my district at least) we have balanced meals that no one in their right mind would eat (seriously I think the Fiesta Nada is something straight out of Hell's Vending Machine) and we've completely eliminated any kind of Physical Education.   ::)

I'm not trying to pass judgement on the school for banning the sale of candy.  If you want candy that bad during the day, bring it from home.  It's the school's loss if they don't want to sell candy.  My problem is that the punishment doesn't fit the crime.  This punishment is much too severe.  Take his candy away.  Give him a detention.  That's all fine.  However, to strip him of his elected post and suspend him?  That's going too far.

you can eat anything in class though.

All schools are different. Mine had a rule against eating in class, especially chips and candy, but they were okay with it outside of class. The thing with chips and candy is that they're easy to sneak around, which is why they went to such measures as banning.

i just don't get why they would only ban chips and candy and not just any kind of food you could snack on during class if that was the problem. @~@

unless they'd rather have kids sneaking healthier food into class lol. but who knows maybe they think kids are too much of junk food monglers to consider that.
