This is going to be my first time checking in and I am hoping to do so on Friday. However, I have to go all the way to San Jose after school (means unknown at this point) and there is a very high chance of me not getting there by 3 PM to check in. Is it possible to check in...through phone? I don't believe you can have someone check in that isn't on the room list, right?

Dude, if you're going to be late, go call the hotel and tell them you're going to be arriving late so you'll do a late check in. (:

Alright, just making sure. XD

Thanks!

Also, 3 pm is not the deadline, it's the starting time. So if you're going to check in an hour or so later, it's not a problem. However, if you're not going to be in the area until, say, 10 PM, it's best to let them know.

And don't check in after midnight.  It is an annoying pain and you're VERY lucky if you get an understanding front desk.  Obviously I have dealt with this before XP.  Thankfully only once.  And there was a good reason behind why we didn't call, but that's a long story.

Anywho, like Moonblossom said, if you're going to be checking in during the very late evening it would be polite to call and let them know.

I think 7 is a reasonable time to start letting them know that yes, you will be checking in, it just might be late.

Let them know if you're gonna be late.  At some point if they haven't heard from you yet they will assume that you are not coming and will give your room away.

When I worked at the Nugget that time was 10 pm on a busy night, midnight on a slow night.   We'd hold the room all night if you called in advance...but if you didn't call and showed up 10 minutes after regular check in...there was a good chance your room would be gone.

Better safe than sorry, call and let them know you may be a late arrival.

ALSO FYI...for those new and doing a credit card guarantee on your room..when you check into the Hilton your card will be authorized for $150+ for a security deposit.  For the Marriott they authorize $50 for each day you are staying.  Some people who are using Debit cards, eventhough it is an "authorization" only not a charge, your bank may not allow you to withdrawl that money.  So keep in mind that you will need at least an additional $200 on top of the room fee in extra money.  Last year I stayed at the Hilton and on the room reservation site there is no indication that a security deposit would be authorized.  Since I normally only get rooms in Las Vegas, they do not charge for any security deposit.  So the next day I went to check my account and my STUPID US BANK had charged me $200 in overdraft charges because the hotel did not advise me they were authorizing for security deposit.  SO BEWARE!!!

Last year they let me check in around 1:30, since there was a room ready, but there's no guarantee your room will be clean before 3.

If you know for certain you're going to be early, you can call the hotel a few days in advance and request early check-in, but it's not a surefire thing.
