I think since so many people so mini sword battles in the halls or outside of the Con, I think there should be a contest that allows cosplayers to create skits/sword battles/battles in general for judging on choreography and skill! ;D Or a sword man-type fight where people fight each other using swords that are made out of harmless stuff. (Styrofoam, rubber swords, etc.) :)

Epic battles!!! Haha... oh yes. this could be awesome. I'm not sure about liability and what not.

Kazuko

A) theres already masqurade for that kinda shenanigans with the skits and swordfighting

B) Wepons have to be peacebonded

C) Probally wouldnt work so well with liabilities

Hmm, I think I saw something like this at Comiccon (probaly only going to Comiccon that particular time.  Its so crowded.) .  THere was a bunch of people dressed medeival style.  The battlers had real armor and stuff.  Real but blunted weaponry if I'm not mistaken.  The battles only lasted until the first tactical attack/touch to the other person really.  Then the next battler would enter the ring.

If people were willing to put time/effort/money into armor so they couldn't get hurt... BUtI mean it was full on chainmail/helmets/armor/sheilds/the works.  Probably only worked at comiccon because there is such a multitude of attendees there compared to our little fanime.

I still like fanime better though.

That would be cool, but as Kazuko pointed out, the Masquerade is the best outlet for that kind of thing.

Outside of the convention hall would be especially tricky...even dealing with things like styrofoam and rubber, people could still get hurt.

In the past I remember seeing some martial arts schools that would do demonstrations with weapons (like those short movies from Soul Calibur) so maybe more of that kind of stuff could come back, but I don't see a "weapon competition" of any sort being able to fly at Fanime. Sorry. :-(

I swear, didn't we already go through this discussion? >.>

Oh yea, it's similar, but liability is still an issue.

If you really wanted to build a skit based off epic sword man-type fighting, you could just make a 3 minute video off of it and send it to Stage Zero or if there would be cosplay involved, just do the choreography skit at masquerade.

Dunno if Stage Zero still does the 3 minute videos, but they're always the best venue for unrestricted video performances(within reason) at Fanime IMO.

One of those ideas sounds like our masquerade and another one sounds like it would be a legal nightmare. Sorry. :(

As for the 'harmless stuff', you can still get hurt with those materials (nerf darts can hurt) which ties into the legal nightmare.

Yeah, I understand all the liability stuff. It was just a suggestion. :3
