Does anyone know how cell phone reception will be at the San Jose Convention Center during the Con?
If it is terrible, would walk talkies be an appropriate substitute?

My verizon worked perfectly fine when I was in there, I noticed not a problem.

I second that Verizon works perfectly.

Since it is a metropolitan area, there are plenty of cell towers around, I'm sure. It would be pretty bad form on the part of the cell phone companies if they didn't have acceptable reception in such a populated area.

Now, if we were at RuralCon 09, I can see where there would be a problem, but since San Jose is a city in an area full of cities, there shouldn't be a problem.

Unless, of course, you were hiding in the very fortified secret dungeon of the CC, but since I doubt that...  ;)

I had no problem with my T-Mobile phone at the con and in my room.

I have never had any issues with any of my cell phones over the years on AT&T's network.

Walkie-Talkies would work, but I believe that we do have numerous other people that use them (including staff) on a day-to-day basis. There should be enough channels for everyone though.

more often than not, its not the phone company but the thick concrete and rebar (see faraday cage). You can probably get much better reception by simply walking out of the meeting room, exhibit hall or the convention center.

for example our radios can reach all the way out to spartan stadium, but has trouble getting into certain meeting rooms. (but then we do have a super secret method that allows us to use the radios in the first place)

Me thinks Claudia would appreciate that:)

Thank you all for your suggestions/opinions.  I'll inform my group, and that will be one less thing to worry about for the trip.
