To the original poster, I will say this:

I have friends who are on the bigger-side, but that doesn't stop them from making very nice costumes and wearing them at cons.  They enjoy the characters they're cosplaying, and don't care if people don't like the way they look or if they get bashed on websites/forums.

Are you yourself not comfortable with your physical appearance that you have to wear a Shinigami costume to hide your arms & body so that people won't make fun of you?

I'm a thin-person myself, and people bash me for cosplaying Jann Lee from Dead or Alive because I don't have bulging-muscles on my arms.  Do i care?  Of course not.  I enjoy DOA, i like the character, and I have fun cosplaying him at cons.  All of that negativity I hear about (I don't bother reading it) doesn't faze me.

I am comfortable in my size and I never ment to make this post look as though it were a bash. When I posted this my intentions weren't to discourage my fellow big people, as I am a big person myself, but to make them aware that there are things that are just wrong to do. Cosplaying as a character that doesn't matchyour body tpe is one of them.

Back to the question. I love my body type, and embrace being who I am. I posted this moreso to make people think befor they act, and as I said not to discourage.
Maybe what I should say is: If you are going to do a cosplay that doesn't match your body-type, modify it so that it does.

Wow.  Just wow.  I can't believe you would post this.  Free speech and all, I won't argue your right to say it.  But Good Gravy, what a hateful thing to say to people who just want to express themselves.   I have a million nasty things I'd love to say, but I'll just let karma have it's way with you.

(To clarify I'm really just responding to the original post.  I didn't read a lot of the other posts.)

THIS IS NOT MENT OT HURT PEOPLE!!

OMG! When the heck did people become so darned sensitive? Did I say something mean or bad? Am I talking about anyone?

And if you have anything to say to me, they have the PRIVATE MESSAGE feature for a reason.

I'm a big girl too. At first I was like "OMG FAT WOMEN AND SKIRT!" ><

But now, if some one wants to dress up as a decent anime person and they're over weight, I really feel it is the person's choice to do so.

But fat skimpy stuff, no. I feel like even some of the skinny chicks can't even do it do to their shape.

I don't know though  ;D

I totally agree! I would wear a skirt but it would be atleast knee length.

Uncalled for? You're the one spreading your narrow-minded jargon because of your own self-consciousness. While I agree people should have some decency whilst cosplaying, they shouldn't have to feel restricted as to what character to cosplay solely for the fact that they're overweight.

Not only that, but the childish, temperamental comments you make are quite irritating.

Free speech is not bad but you know your version of what people should be limited to is really upsetting, I am a pudgy person 180 to be exact and I plan on cosplaying orihime (depending if i can get it done) and you know sure there are people who are big that make a cosplay tasteful. Everyone in any body type has the right to cosplay whatever they please, Its not making everyone bad but you feel it does because why? Is it your self conciousness deep down inside? If every person with a different skin color can cosplay who they please then anyone with a body type can do the same

Cosplay is about appreciation for the character and if they want to do it then let em  do it! You to be honest have no right to say that OMG EVERY BIG PERSON IS GOING TO LOOK BAD BECAUSE OF ONE PERSON COSPLAYING A CHARACTER THAT DONT SUIT EM

When really EVERYONE IN ANY BODY TYPE CAN cosplay what they want

btw its called a Topic not a forum

Hold on Kazuko, I thought said you weren't cosplaying, what's with the change of heart?

You know you could have just PM'ed me with that question....
I wasent going to cosplay because orignally i had no plan on going to fanime because of a silly reason but I really want to go and fanime isnt fun when you dont cosplay

Eurobeat King

Original poster (your name is too complicated & long to type), you go ahead and cosplay what you want to at FanimeCon, be it a generic-Shinigami costume or something else.  But with your first post, did you expect JUST nice & friendly replies?
"Freedom is the right of all sentient cosplayers."

My aplogies: Topic. (This is Fanimes forum -_-)
And wow. I never thought I was going to made into a self-concious bad guy. Oh, well, I'll take my new title. But, for the 15th million time, this topic was not ment to hurt peoples feelings. I strictly made it to encourage consideration when doing a cosplay. And to all you loser who keep calling me SELF CONCIOUS... S.T.O.P. I could see if you people knew me but you don't. How dare any of you say I'm "self-concious" because I'd perfer to cosplay something that won't make a complete ass of myself. SURE, anybody can Cosplay as anyone. I could Cosplay as Kagome but I won't. Why? Becasue I dont' have the body type! I swear... These forums are filled with people who have serious comprehension skill issues. I could see if I was just on here talking smack say "Yeah, fat people are ugly!", or going on rants about fat people but I'm not. I'm a big person myself so I know what I'm talking about.

Not really, that was actually kind of a bash. And call it what want but my cosplay is going to be cool. I never expect friendly replies to my topics.... Heck I don't expect replies at all (not all of my topis are negativly themed, either. I'm actually a really nice person.). I don't care what people think of me or my topic,or my cosplay: My opinion remains the same.

Umm, didn't you read Eurobeat's post? What were you expecting when you said what you said. And like he mentioned, go right ahead and cosplay as a generic shinigami. But when you think about it, are you having fun doing so? Are you cosplaying as that generic character because that's simply what your body type is allowing you? With that kind of thought, to me at least, and that's just my opinion, it seems that you're not having fun. And that's what cosplay is all about, having fun. Then again, that's just my two cents.

Dude, what the heck. I am having fun. I love Bleach and I want to dress as Shinigami but none of the shinigami in Bleach itself.

Alright, great. You're having fun, I never said you weren't, I like Bleach as well. That was simply my opinion and how I interpreted things. But part of what I said was are you simply cosplaying as the generic shinigami because that's what your body type allows you? By what you originally stated, I am led to believe so. I'm not trying to stir anything up, just throwing my view out there.

To late, you just did.
So, to answer your question: HELL NO.
I can cosplay anything I want to, but I choose not to becasue frankly, something just won't look good on me.
I can MODIFY certain cosplay to make it work for me but other than that your answer it no.

XpHoBiaX

I crossplayed Roy Mustang and Vampire knight...and I was pudgy. But It worked out XD I had some cool stuff too. XD And was mistaken for a Roxas when I got a key blade. At least i was recognizable to some extent XD

Personally, I think it'd be tastless to wear a skimpy cosplay no matter who you are...in my opinion only. For myself, I think I should leave that to more slender girls. But that doesn't mean i won't find ways to be a Lulu or some female character from another anime. It's all about tailoring an outfit to your size and liking. I think, if the costume doesn't fit you properly...yes it will be ugly and unfitting. Especially it the outfit is tight in all the wrong places, becuase it will make you look pudgy...even if you don't have any pudgyness.

kinda like when i tattoo...some tattoos just can't be done in certain places or exactly as the customer wants on body type alone. Sorry, but we can still make it work for you.

Anyways...all technicalities aside, fanime is a once a year event. I'll be showing some skin this year. lol

Jun-Watarase

You know, while I absolutely appreciate you considering the well-being of other people's eyes by not cosplaying something you obviously can't pull off, that's your choice. There's no need to force your self-consciousness on others by telling them what they can't and cannot do. Yes, I use "self-consciousness" because... why else would this bother you enough that it makes YOU feel ashamed? Sure, I dislike anything that shows more than what should be considered, well, tastefully revealing... but if they feel like they want to express their fandom by cosplaying a character they like, it's perfectly fine, as long as they aren't DOING IT FOR THE SAKE OF BEING SKIMPY. Weeaboos make a lot of otaku feel somewhat ashamed of their fandom, but they don't stop others from loving what they love, nor do they feel like they should stop loving it because idiotics share the same fandom.

Cosplay what you want. If YOU don't feel comfortable cosplaying the character, then no one's forcing you to. As for this topic being hurtful... it isn't. Why would it affect me? I'm not fat. I cosplay what I want to cosplay. My friends who are on the bigger side have enough confidence and know better as to not let someone making foolish comments on the internet affect them. This isn't hurtful-- more like painfully idiotic.
