Serious Business / Re: Prop 8 debate - PLEASE READ!

I learned that the 2nd and 11th amendments are very important. For some reason I was told to never forget these two. If one is violated so is the other.
(the 11th is your unenumerated rights, btw)

Are you sure on those numbers?

2nd is Right to Bear Arms.
11th is "States can't be directly sued in federal courts."
9th is unenumerated rights, but that's not really a strong one.
14th is "equal protection", which is probably what will get bandied about.

To be quite honest, most of these have been limited (arguably gutted) over the years, 10, 9, and maybe 2.  [debates on 2 should be in a different topic].  But 1 and 14 are still pretty strong, so we'll see.

This earns you a month vacation from Serious Business.  You may continue to view and read, but may not post or reply here.

Rest of everyone, please carry on.  I'll lay low.

General Anime Chat / Re: Appropriate PG-13 Anime- HELP!
November 03, 2008, 04:39:13 PM
I like the concept of the Recommendations megathread, and I continue to support its existence.

Megathreads are not like regular threads: they aren't for browsing.  For recommendation threads in general, the tendency is to just skim the recent pages, make your post, then stick around for a page or two of replies, then leave.   It functions to consolidate a lot of mini-discussions.

I don't think there should be an expectation of "You must read every other recommendation before asking about your own tastes", at least for expected giant threads.

The "explain why your like your favorite anime" is a different concept, and probably an interesting starter.  But it's not the same as a recommendation, of course.

I appreciate the feedback, even if we disagree.

I'm not going to touch all of these.

But I will said that I had the chance to take high-speed rail across France a couple weeks ago.
It was awesome.  Going a peak of 200 mph across the country, and covering 450 miles in 3 hours (point to point)
is nifty.  It's like regular rail, but the scenery moves very fast.

If I could hop on a train from my house and go to LA in 2 hours or San Diego in 3 hours, I'd probably go every week.   That's way different from anything Amtrak provides.

Yes, I know Prop 1A is flawed, and there are some other issues.  To all this logic, I counter: It's cool.

So, Prop 1A.  Because it's cool.

Fucking spectacular, I read this forum and fucked my dog.
I'm just tired of you.  Please enjoy your week in byo/b/

So, in order:
Watched the Raiders commit a safety.
Went to church.
Watched the Raiders self destruct some more.
Received code updates on Fanime's pre-registration system.
Went to a meeting for a different convention
Listened to the Niners self-destruct.
Fixed some TV issues
Cheered and cursed my luck in my three fantasy football teams.
Watched "Learn how to play the piano" on PBS.  It's actually really good.
Read a hilarious playthrough of Rollercoaster Tycoon.
Baked a pie.
Took a nap.
Banned someone.
Post here.

Yeah, my Sundays are typically like this.

This is why I'm not on Twitter.

Don't make this serious business. That goes in the debate section.
I will ask to move the intellectual property discussion over to Serious Business.

That said, I personally think it's strictly uncool to directly take someone's avatar and use it for yourself.
Regardless of who created the avatar, it's just confusing to use what someone else was recently using.
That's just confusing.

Oh jeez, another spelling nazi?  We already have one, and he's doing alright.  I don't think he needs help.

Besides, Dev, you swear in your profile text, and well as in every other post you've made.  Knock it off.

You're supposed to lock them and keep them in their entirety. Leaving it open only leads to the thread losing its appeal.

There's a little ambiguity here.

If you're referring to threads in Hall of Fame/et.al., they are locked, even if they don't have an icon.  Unless I made a mistake, you cannot create new threads or reply to threads there.

If you're referring to ancient threads in Things in the Universe, they've remained open for the last 5 years.  So, I'm not 100% sure how they lose appeal by remaining untouched.

Anyway, this is probably a discussion for a separate thread, thanks.

It's not that hard to do it. Sheesh. It's a very simple concept. That and we're asking YOU, the entire populace of this forum, to give us posts and links that you think should be saved. I have only seen 1 or 2 people actually DO that.

We've been through this before.

To all, we are going through with regular forum cleanup.  Part of this is manual review.
As repeated over and over and over and over again, you have the option to nominate important threads.

For some reason, I don't see many people doing this.  I would ask why, but I really am not interested.

I thank everyone for their comments on the cleanup process.  I understand that not everyone agrees.  That's fine.  I acknowledge this too.  But we'll going to continue the cleanup process.  Further discussion is unlikely to change this.

Thanks,
sysadmin

p.s. If you have some burning need to save everything, find some mirroring software, save a copy of the forums on your local hard drive, and stop complaining about it in this thread.

With respect to the forums, I'm actually in favor of cleaning up the older stuff.

You are more than welcome to archive the threads to your own storage.

That said, truly epic threads can be nominated to the Hall of Fame still.  But only epic ones.

Serious Business / Re: 700 Billion Dollar Bailout
September 30, 2008, 01:35:20 AM
That's cool.  I want to make sure we're all using the same words to mean the same thing.  [also, I like citations and definitions in the Serious Business forum. ;)]

The technical definitions of recession and depression are interesting, but they're hard to calculate until, like, a year after the fact.  Current GDP growth is probably close to zero though, at least, according to the cites in that Wikipedia article.

But, and this is the hard part for me to swallow, the same people who are giving us the worst-case gloom and doom scenarios, are the same people who were supposedly responsible for not letting us get to this point.   My trust in their solutions is a bit ragged at this point.

We've gone through many rough patches, usually about every 8 years.   It's a cyclic nature.  I'm still trying to figure out why the bailout is strictly necessary though; but I suppose I'd need to study the lending habits of the banks that are not yet bankrupt.
But, considering that we've gone through the last several recessions without a major intervention, why is one inherently needed now?

My mom was on a game show once (during the 80s?). It involved crossword puzzles, I believe. I forgot the title, and she is asleep right now. XD
If it was Scrabble, that was an awesome show.  It's what inspired me to love game shows of the 80s.

It it was Cross-Wits, that's slightly less awesome, but fun.

I should post that one game show I was on.  Maybe I'll get it converted and post it.

I heard in the underground, (and on bbc I think it was) that 85 billion dollars were printed in this country. Cuasing all other countries to print 85 billion to balance the out their currency with ours (I don't know the term off the top of my head)

Printed currency is of no consequence here; it has nothing to do with any of the other numbers in this article.

If I get a $400,000 loan to buy a house, I don't actually get a large stack of twenties.  That money is either in checking accounts or in the securities that back the mortgage.  There's a long long long explanation of how money works, which I don't want to deal with.

Quote from: Sunara Ishi on September 25, 2008, 11:56:02 PM
I think a bail-out needs to be done to keep the economy afloat and keep businesses from failing; and thus keeping jobs.

I'm unconvinced that we're on a brink of an actual depression.  I'd like some actual arguments that suggest this is "necessary", with actual numbers.  Otherwise, this is a form of "trust me!" from the people who got us into this mess.

Not every bank in the world dealt with subprime mortgages.  Many smaller banks continue to loan out actual money to actual people.

I think the days of the 0%-down mortgage is practically over, of course.  But as long as banks continue to create money by loaning it out; and those people pay it bank, then our cycle will continue.

Quote from: Chiri Kcrinh on September 27, 2008, 12:20:06 AM
They screw with the economy and are trying to deny the fact that we ARE in a depression because that would just cause freaking panic. The signs are all there, the name just hasn't been put onto the disease.

Definition and citation, please.  Just because a talking head says this, doesn't make it true.

I think we're in a reality check, but I don't see what's wrong with the underlying fundamentals.

It's a very reasonable guideline.

When official news regarding AA registration is ready to be made, it will be announced on the main site.
That's the best site for all official FanimeCon news.

Thanks.

one question, though: since you put out the call for mods, how many postcards/various things have you actually gotten in the mail from people who are interested?

As of Monday September 29th, I have received 3 emails and 1 PM, from people who are actually interested.
Of those, I have received 1 item in the mail.

I am not too worried because of this.  The people who have applied seem very sound to me, so it is just a matter of finishing the rest of the steps.
