Would it be too out of place to cosplay a Fremen at Fanimecon?

As in the desert Fremen of Dune.  Though the cosplay could easily be altered to that of Desert Punk, I'm just wondering if it would be too "out there".

It may too unanime and too sci fi convention. That is my thoughts. But a if you want to alter it it could work. If you really want to wear that though, i don't see why not. I just don't know how many people will recognize it if that is what you want.

Rodney_Pheonix

Eh, it'd be interesting to see how many recognize it as a Fremen Cosplay and not a Desert Punk. I wonder why no one's thought of doing an Anime based in the world of Dune.

I'd like as many points of view on this as I can, rather than going off just one person's thoughts on the subject.

I don't think it'd be that out of place. Every year one sees people from Star Trek, Star Wars, Stargate and various other SciFi shows. I have a friend who usually dresses up like a Captain in the Royal Navy, just cause he can. Wear whatever you want. =) Just don't expect a ton of people to know who/what you are right off the bat. They'll try and figure out what anime you're from first. XD

I think it'd be awesome if Richard Dean Anderson, Christopher Judge, Amanda Taping, (forgot who plays Daniel) showed up at a bunch of Cons in character, just to see how many people recognized them as the actual actors, instead o incredibly good cosplays.

[Edit]: Thanks for the input on my off the wall idea.

Michael Shanks. (I have a Stargrate problem).

I have heard of a few actors doing that.
Crispin Freeman (voice actor for Alucard in Hellsing and many, many others) once went to a con as Alucard and no one believed him when he said who he was.
Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) also went to a con as Shaun.

Which style of Fremen are you doing? I think the ones in the SciFi channel's version of Dune were awesome, better than the original movie (but hey, they have better special effects nowadays).

Frak.. I haven't seen the original or the miniseries recently enough to know the differences, well I remember a Sandworm jumping up and partially swallowing a thropter..that was in Children of Dune right? (Are they ever going to continue that? Weren't they fairly true to the books?)

Currently the major problem I've run into is getting or making a prop Crysknife. Well that and some theatrical lenses for Spice addiction.

Either way when I think of Fremen, I think person in black suit, pant legs tucked into boots, long sleeves tucked into gloves with a facemask possibly a hood built into the facemask, leaving as little flesh exposed to the elements as possible, then cover that up with a hooded sandy brown robe made of a rough cloth. Possibly a stolen Las-gun on the back.

Gurney Halleck (I know I'm close, not sure if I spelled it right though) would be more fun to hang around with though. Especially if the person doing the cosplaying could play the guitar well. Have you seen "the Ballad of Duncan Idaho"? if not youtube it, provided Youtube hasn't gone copyrightnazi on it.

Lol watch much BSG?

The sandworm jumping up to swallow the thopter was Dune. I didn't actually see Children of Dune, I heard it wasn't as good.

As for the contact lenses, they don't have any at 9mmsfx.com so I have nooo idea where you would even look. If you need to make a Crysknife I'd recommend cutting out the general shape in wood and then building it up with Bondo, then sanding it down (power tools highly recommended). It'll be easy to put a texture on Bondo too, as befits a tooth from a giant worm. I did that last year to make a prop sword and it turned out quite nicely.

Even though I'm not a fan. I can say, most people probably won't recognize it(unless they have happened to have read/watched Dune.

However, my stance is, if you want to, do it. Even though Fanime is an anime con. You often see characters at anime cons, that aren't from anime. Storm Troopers are the usual, Harry Potter, etc.... It would be different, and I imagine how fun it'll be for you, when other Dune fans recognize the costume.

As a fan of dune, i think it would be cool XD

I think you might find a decent number of anime fans are also sci fi fans, or at least theyve read the books. You doing the eyes?

T'would be interesting, however, not counting my hair (which is brown not red) I look a bit more like Baron Harkonnen (

Provided I can find the contacts. I've found one foreign site that has theatrical full eye cover lenses that has them, however the price comes out to be near 400 dollars. Though I think I could skimp and just got with dark blue contacts if I can't find a price better than that.. though my IRS refund could cover about half. if I could scav. the other half....

If you guys notice something a bit more...economical you mind sending me a PM?

[Edit:] Lookie what I found. Closer to what my Tax Refund can cover.

Excuse me but what is bondo?

Bondo is a polyester resin putty. It's used to fill in dents on cars if they can't be popped out and a million other home improvement/hobby sorts of things. I like to think of it as a miracle material. It solidifies to be rock hard, and can be sanded easily (with power tools. I used a Dremel), and painted. It won't get dinged up and it won't fall apart, and if you mess up while working on it, you just put more on and keep going.

Only use it if you have access to a well ventilated area (outside is good, or a garage with the door open) cause the fumes are nasty (learned this the hard way). Also wear gloves when applying it and a mask when sanding it. Yay chemicals.

yes, bondo would be the perfect thing to use, i was thinking about mentioning plaster, but it'd be easy to knick and break around the edges. start with a thin wood core and build up the bondo in thicknesses though, dont throw it all together like playdough because it'll take a really long time to cure/set up. also, if you want to give it a distressed/used look, use a lighter or small blowtorch to singe parts of it.

edit: I was wrong. They don't sell it in your average hardware store. (Home Depot, OSH). Runewitt's suggestion (below) is better.

try auto parts stores, they might sell smaller kits, or ask any car-people you know if they have any
